I just got a trojan (im guessing its from a Windows XP installation keygen which i tried to download), now what this trojan does is that it opens up random IE windows with ads at random intervals. That is sadly all the info i can give as it is pretty much all it does, ive tried Adaware and Avira which both did not work. Is there another way?

the most secure way would be to format everything, reinstall, check your backups for malware and play it back.

as thats quite some hassle (although it's the only realy secure method) you could also create an antivirus boot cd (i prefer the kaspersky one which you can get for free from the attached link), burn it, boot it and scan/clean your system.

of course you could also try to run an online malware scanner, but this would be the least secure action you can take (as you can't be sure if the malware youve caught wouldn't somehow interfere then)

best way is to reinstall xp, install a clean antivirus that you already downloaded before and then go online. sometime when i used xp for first time after installation i got virus only going online to download some files
use windows 7 if your machine can support it

I second the Reinstall, once your system has been compromised there is no way to be 100% sure it is gone.

I have always had luck with using clamwin and spybot together, or if you are extra paranoid check out deep freeze. Deep Freeze lets you do what ever you want and it gets wiped when you reboot. I use it on a number of production machines that I need to have 99.99999999% uptime.

reinstalling should always be a last resort

as for the comment that once u have got a infection you can never be 100% sure its all gone all i have to say to that is your talking total bollocks
if you know what your doing then their is no reason you cant remove an infection and guarantee the machine is free from infection
