3D is a gimmick, but so is augmented reality, high definition screens and graphics, etc. Even gaming in general is a gimmick simply because a gimmick is something that attracts attention.
Boobs are no gimmick. ;D Apart from plastic ones.

OT: A lot during Resi, Mario kart and other jerky action games.

First of all, the 3D being a gimmick or not isn't even the topic's point, but if you guys insist that 3D is gimmick, then I can say the same about HD.
But the 3DS only has 3D not HD plus the 3DS's 3D is different to the movie and TV 3D so the 3DS's 3D is a gimmick since it adds little to nothing to gameplay but the movie and TV 3D and HD does add something from better picture quality and makes watching the show feel more interactive, yes i'm aware it might add depth but to be honest we had alot of platformers and so forth before the 3DS was made and us gamers judge depth perfectly without the need of 3D.

I agree with some of your other posts, about how the 3D should be optional and you shouldn't have to explain why you bought a 3DS with the intention of not using 3D, but not your latest post. The 3DS's 3D effect is exactly the same as movies and TVs 3D. It's a different experience compared with wearing glasses, but the effect is still the same. I sometimes get headaches when watching a very long film in 3D at the cinema, but I believe this is due to the glasses pinching the bridge of my nose and not the 3D effect. There are also TVs using the same technology as the 3DS, making use of parallax barriers to deliver glasses-less 3D.

The 3D effect on some games absolutely amazes me, probably more than it would if I were looking at the same image in 2D but with a much higher resolution and better AA. For what it's worth, sometimes I get headaches from the 3DS in poor lighting conditions when I'm tired. I tend to have the 3D on constantly during the day as long as the screen is completely clean (kids sometimes dirty it up), but turn it off on a night. I very rarely break the 3D unless I'm using the gyroscope, but I agree with others that have said ghosting is a problem. On some games ghosting is inevitable and it cannot be fixed by adjusting the 3DS's.

3D is no more a gimmick than HD is. HD allows us to see things clearer, thus more realistically. 3D does the same by adding depth, which is the very reason we (most of us) have 2 eyes. Personally, I expect the current handheld generation's successors to include 3D. Perhaps even an interim version of the Vita will be released with a 3D screen at some point.

In MGS3D DEMO, everything is doubled for me. 3D in the woods isn't a good idea.
And i didn't know 3DS could "pop out" things, isn't just depht?

I was talking about HD in general, not the 3DS since it doesn't have HD to begin with.

You're wrong, it does actually add to gameplay, have you played Resident Evil Revelations in 3D? Or Super Mario 3D Land in 3D? Or Zelda Ocarina of Time in 3D? Just because some people don't like the 3D, doesn't really make it a gimmick.

I pretty much just keep it turned off unless there is a cutscene showing. The 3D hurts my eyes after awhile, and I don't have to put up with Navi telling me to take a break every 15 minutes.
I have over 100 hours logged on OoT 3D, and never get Navi telling me that message.
unless you have to touch the icon, which I never do.

@OP Like, almost never. I did at first, quite a bit (for about a second) but somehow I've mastered the art of staying in the sweet spot

The people saying that the 3DS 3D is different are just plain wrong, all technology involving 3D are just ways of directing images to each of your eyes.
One for the left and one for the right eye. Two angles of the in game models if it's a 3D game.
The 3DS screens can make stuff pop out just like any other screen.

I've seen images in the picture viewer that pops out like 1.5 inches or so, you can find mpo's like that here on the temp.
Pop out effects does happen in games too, but aren't used as often.
You can try to replicate it in OoT by moving around the camera in first person if you want.

If the 3D is the same as the 3D in movies and TV so forth then explain why I get a headache only from the 3DS's 3D but not from 3D movies?

I don't have the other games cause I can't be bothered with the 3DS at the moment but I played and finished OoT on the 3DS and I done it without 3D and it wasn't so hard to play. Again its not that I don't like 3D otherwise i'll hate 3D movies but somehow 3D movies are fine for me but the 3DS's 3D gives me headaches.

been playing a lot of pilotwings recently (superb game and great use of the 3d effect). i feel it's fine aside from the harder plane missions with targets where i kinda move my head as a reaction to needing to turn sharply and it completely messes up the 3d. i just turned it off completely to nail those missions.

it is superb in zelda though!

I sometimes take the 3D effect off in Snake Eater each 2-10 mins. The 3D in that game is awesome but to stay with 3D on in it throughout the whole game... naw I can't do that due to not seeing that much of the surroundings very well.(when in 3rd person view)

I pretty much use 3D on everything, since I don't own any games that require you to move the 3DS around.

EDIT: Forgot that MK7 has gyroscope mode, but I never use that.

it took me 5 minutes to learn how to adjust the 3ds, so with normal play, i dont break the effekt at all. also, if it ever breaks cause i need to move, it takes about 2 seconds to find the right angle

to be honest, i expected worse when everyone was on a rampage about the narrow angle and stuff...

I almost never break the effect while using it. The only times its ever happened is when I'm checking out the motion controls in Ocarina of Time 3D, whether it be for aiming or L+View. In the event that it does break, I can find it easily in a second or two.

With the way people were complaining about how difficult it is to find/stick with the sweet spot, I thought it was gonna be pretty bad and a lot of hassle. However, I actually had almost no trouble with it at all. Granted it took me a minute or two to figure out how I needed to hold the 3DS the first time I got mine, I've never had problems locating it at all in subsequent plays and usage.
