Use DOP-Mii, it's better.

Will work on any system.
Q3) how do i do this?
You should get it when you're in DOP-Mii. Go to Channels, and then update the Shop Channel. Easy.
Q4) once wii shop channel is updated can i then update my other channels through the shop channel?
Yes.
Q5) will i then be able to download the i-player channel?
You're from England, so yes, you can.
Q6) what is the trucha bug and do i need it?
Trucha-Bug is used for:

-Custom Discs. If you modify an Wii Game ISO (like replacing some music/etc.) it needs to be signed. The Wii won't play the signed Disc if you don't have the Trucha-Bug (from the Disc-Channel. Loaders work fine). Though this isn't needed now, because Riivolution is out now.
-Some Homebrew needs it, so it can acess and edit some things. Though it should be enough if you only patch IOS36 with all patches DOP-Mii offers, and use that one for those Apps. Or use the cIOSes for this.
-Maybe the Systemmenu IOS also needs this patch so that it will play your WADs.

Oh, you're new to homebrew? Then you should be realy carefully...everything at your own risk.

These two Links should be enough:
http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/DOP-Mii
http://www.wiibrew.org/wiki/Bannerbomb
Read everything carefully.

no i hacked my wii last summer, just never thought about updating the channels untill the i-player channel was releast, as i cant go on the shop channel. lol
