As you may already know Sony delivered a big blow to Linux users on the pre-slim PS3 models by disabling the “Other OS” option with the latest firmware update, however The fight is not over yet, Hacker George Hotz has vowed to find a way around the latest firmware to re-enable Linux back on the console.

In his latest blog post “Don’t Update“, Hotz advises Linux users not to update until he finds a safe way to keep the “Other OS” option, he wrote “A note to people interested in the exploit and retaining OtherOS support, DO NOT UPDATE. When 3.21 comes out, I will look into a safe way of updating to retain OtherOS support, perhaps something like Hellcat’s Recovery Flasher. I never intended to touch CFW, but if that’s how you want to play…”

According to Sony the “Other OS” option had to be removed due to security concerns, most likely to prevent people from playing pirate copies, they stated with with feature disabled they can deliver content on a secure system but there’s a lot more to it as Hotz stated in his blog post.

“And this is about more than this feature right now. It’s about whether these companies have the right to take away advertised features from a product you purchased. Imagine if an exploit were found in Safari on the iPhone, but instead of fixing it, Apple decides to pull web browsing altogether. Legally, they may be within their right to do so, but we have to show them it’s the wrong move for the future of the product and the company.”

haha this is funny, I'd love to see what Hotz can do.

I just think its funny he didn't expect sony to do this. I mean until this sony with the ps3 has had a pretty much flawless security record, why risk losing money to piracy when there is a simple fix to the problem, take the feature away.

Its like if you owned a casino and some one figured out a way for getting one peticular machine to pay out constantly, what do you do ? you take it away and it only fair for a company to protect its product.

He wants to find a way to get 3.21 with the OtherOS intact, this has nothing to do with piracy.

BULLSHIT his whole goal is to find exploits in the ps3 so homebrew (and piracy) can be done. he would have succeeded too if sony didn't plug the only hole to exploit

because its completely impossible for him to bring back OtherOS right. sony have been pretty smart with their anti homebrew/anti piracy so far. but if enough people get together on it its bound to break sooner or later. First it was hotz with the lv 0 and 1 dumps, now JaicraB with a Lv 2 hv dump. its just going to get bigger from here, more and more people are going to work on it. No one is going to give up just because sony removed OtherOS.

The OtherOS feature is important because it was through linux and XP that Geohot could access the Hardware of the PS3.

Not everybody seeks to hack a console to pirate games. It's called homebrew. And really, would you want to download 25GB sized PS3 games? And unless they're able to run through a USB port, you're screwed. No one's gonna buy a Bluray burner and discs to pirate PS3 games. You might as well just buy the games used or something. Even then, I don't think many people bothered dumping PS3 games since it's the only console this gen without a way to pirate games.

As for Sony, I think it's a silly move. By the time anything would have come of the exploit, odds are they could've updated the PS3 with a way to keep OtherOS while fixing the exploit.

agbx database has around 750~ games dumped for ps3 i think. we've been able to dump ps3 games for ages now, its just no one has been really been bothered to keep track of them.

Wrong. GeoHotz is 100% AGAINST piracy. His goal is to get homebrew. It may then be abused by other, less talented "hackers" who will steal all fame, and be hailed as heroes when in actual fact, they did nothing GeoHotz couldn't have done if he wanted, but GeoHotz won't be releasing any piracy related stuff unless he has a sudden change of heart. Reading his blog posts, I don't think thats likely.

SONY made a grave mistake. OpenPlatform was pretty much the strongest force in keeping hackers of their backs, at least those not into piracy. Nice job breaking it.

IIRC, those are incomplete dumps. So they could have to redump them in the future.

...I still have to see something from GeoHot, aside a few screenshot and some wires soldered here and there.

no it wasnt

it was the encryption and the single SPE core dedicated to system security that kept hackers at bay

I am not talking about physical/digital defenses. If anything, they are the attack target for hackers. What I am talking about is that the presence of an ability to run custom code on the platform without having to hack it in the first place was instrumental in keeping the homebrew scene from trying to liberate the PS3, leaving only pirates interested in cracking it. Until they removed it.
