Hacking Hori making Cube-style Classic Controller

No, the original Gamecube controller is still better than this.

With the Hori controller, you wouldnt be able to play Gamecube games properly.

Look at the button placement, mainly A, B, X, and Y

You could still use it to play, but it would be a handicap as the button placement is backwards.
I mean

Playing SNES games would be better on this controller than on original GC one.

Still, GC controller is still one of the best controllers out there.

just like the classic controller, another pointless item if u hav the wavebird?
The classic controller isn't useless if you have a wavebird - for a start you can control the wii system menu with the classic controller.

QUOTE(Tichinde925 @ Nov 16 2008, 03:39 AM) For N64 VC games, its still preferred to use a regular gamecube controller,
I'd rather use the classic controller for N64 stuff - the analog stick on the GCN controller is fat/short/nothing like the n64 one and feels far less sensitive. The CC stick is much taller, closer to a real N64 pad.

Sega Saturn pad is the pinnacle of gaming control, I can't see anything beating it. I always quite liked the N64 pad too.

This Saturn pad though, not THIS awful one.

The GCN pad is a Virtual Boy pad with added PSX style analog sticks.

Don't agree. Don't agree. Don't...Wait what?

I have N64 and I like to play it's games more with GC controller rather than (!) original N64 pad! I just feel that this little analog will break sometime  And Classic Controller is flat, I don't like flat controllers they feel odd for me...And the cord coming from the bottom is ugh.

Sega Saturn pad...well...yeah maybe it was comfortable, but as I said, I don't overall like flat controllers

And, how the HELL can you say that GCN is Virtual BoyPSX combo?!

This looks ideal for people who [...] want to artificially boost their performance in the myriad shmups on the VC.
Uhm, isn't the huge d-pad of the original Classic Controller better suited for shmups than the tiny, misplaced d-pad on the Hori Classic Controller?
A proper d-pad sure beats a cheap autofire option, since most relevant shmups have autofire enabled, anyway.

That controller I have it, and it's fine, but NOT as good as the Snes one.
The shoulder buttons do an horrible click when you press them, while the Snes has softer and more comfortable buttons, and the d-pad is good but I found myself often unintentionally pressing diagonals.
The placement of the buttons is fine too, but it seems better suited for fighter games, and again, I like better the softness of the Snes pad.

I can see the advantages of the Hori controller over the GC.
  • Some Wiiware games work with the Classic controller but do NOT support the GC controller, so in this regard it's better than the wavebird.
  • As pointed out, it has extra Wii specific buttons and can be used to navigate the system menu, not so with the GC or wavebird.
  • While I love the GC controller and I think it's one of the best controllers ever made, I have to admit it's not well suited for Snes games, in fact the d-pad is too small and harder to reach, and the placement of the buttons, while intuitive and features an unique design that allows he user to recognize any button without looking at the controller, it's great for GC games but some Snes games need you to press two buttons at once, you go and try to press B and Y at the same time on the GC pad....( it's doable, but again uncomfortable ), like in FZERO you accelerate with B and brake with Y, it's just hard to slide your thumb because B and Y are too far away on the GC controller. That's why the classic layout of th A B X Y on the Hori wins unquestionably.

    And the disadvantage
  • You can't play GC games with an Hori controller !! Once in GC mode the Hori controller is not longer recognized by the hardware.
  • The d-pad and the analog stick should be reversed if the player focuses more on 2D games, while if the intention is to play N64 games, what the hell do we need this for ? Give us a N64 shaped classic controller already !!( maybe we should mass e-mail them and let them know

    )
  • ........anything else ?
That's what I think. By the way I use this
dual.gif

when I play VC games ( or Emulators in general, even GB games work great with this ), and it's fabulous.
However some Wiiware games while being playable with the classic controller, do not support the GC one, thus making it impossible to use my stick with those...too bad.

The X-arcade is probably the worst arcade controller you can buy (for the money it sells for). It uses really low quality parts.

If people want a decent arcade style controller then I would recommend either on of the Hori Real Action Pros or get a astrocity panel and spend a couple of hours modding it for home use.

Nice sanwa sticks/buttons guaranteed and easily swapped for seimitsus if you prefer.

I already modded mines, with original Happ parts, thank you

The real plus for me with the x-arcade, is that it works with anything ( my Dreamcast, PS2, PC, GC, XBOX and so on), plus I find the black design sexy.....and it has a real heavy duty feel to it as well.

By the way, I played with the Hori coontroller image in MSpaint ( mu skills are really bad !) and I came up with what I think they should do:

Of course, the placement of the left analog stick is debatable, it depend mainly if you play mostly 2D or 3D games, oh and the 6 buttons are necessary to properly emulate a N64 c-buttons, and would be good to Street Fighter games as well !!

My skills in paint are even worse, but I thought of something like this

While the D-Pad above the analog stick would be a bit hard to reach, you would have classic N-64 feel, plus, I think it should be attached to gamecube ports, adding gamecube compatibility.
