Hide Windows Taskbar during some applications

So, I've been wondering if it was possible to hide the taskbar during specific applications, mainly VMWare.

I have a 17,3" 1600x900 screen and wanted to hide my taskbar so I could set the resolution in my VM's to 1360x768. This would still give me a decent screen to work with, so I don't have to open VMWare in full screen (still possible to access your other programs by alt-tabbing for example).

As far as I know, it's only possible to either always hide your taskbar (unhide when your mouse gets near it) or always show the taskbar.

Is there any application/setting to hide my taskbar only when I'm using VMWare?

I tend to go virtualbox or headless server/RDP big boy VM rather than VMware. Looking around though it has a mode similar to Virtualbox's seamless mode called Unity or something which you might like to try.

I thought there were three options for windows -- auto hide, always on top and normal where things could cover it. Many years ago I do recall a "hidden" priority option for programs, task manager uses it I believe, but it would have been windows 98 era when I was last suffering through that.

Forest for the trees -- can you not stick the taskbar on the side of the screen.

Another option. Call the VM program from a batch script and use something like TSTBarset from http://www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au/CAD_TSUtils.htm ( http://www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au/files/TSTbarSet.txt for the options). Have it set the bar to autohide during that, call the VM and when the VM exits the batch completes and sets the bar back to normal.

I mainly use VMWare since I get it free from school, and we have to do maintain our virtual servers in VMWare.
I know about Unity, but that doesn't give the desktop as a application. Right now I want to use Ubuntu, and I'm not sure if unity is supported with Ubuntu.
Having the taskbar at the side of the screen would be annoying for me, since I've had it at the bottom since the beginning.

Best bet would be the bat, definitely gonna try that out. Thanks for the suggestions!
