I agree the Trucha bug alone would be pointless. IOS36 (and 236) can be patched with Trucha, ES_Identify, and NAND patches. His 249 doesn't have that. If the OP patches 36 with all those using MMM, he will retain compatibility with all apps that only use 36/249.

Once you reach ahbprot + dop-mii there's not need to install any more patched ios rather than 236. Mr wii as terminal_illness (he know way mooore about modules than lot's of people here) said, all newer, even compiled source code will handle a ios_read() function which nullifies "older" ios detection methods.

1) The latest Dop-Mii releases are very unstable, especially when using AHBPROT.
2) No old apps support AHBPROT, so unless you or someone else is going to make a mod of them, a patch is needed (at least for those that use patches).
3) The HBC has a bug which won't allow the use of AHBPROT if you don't have valid internet settings.
4) I said "you might consider" because I know it isn't a requirement these days. If it was I would have said "you need to" instead.
5) There isn't a downside to patching IOS36 with the Trucha bug, ES_Identify, and NAND Access. It only takes a couple minutes to do.

@terminal_illness: Looking back at my original response about him having IOS236, I see that it does come off as insulting. That was not my intention, and I apologize. I sometimes say things that can easily be interpreted as an insult, even though it's not my intention. I'm working on it (trust me, I used to be a lot worse), but forcing myself to see things from all angles isn't an overnight thing (at least for an idiot like me, lol).

You can't declare yourself "so confident lol" because such advices aren't worth. I remember reading your posts a while back (when I was a lurker) and was like "omgz cioz". that´s why most current homebrew gathers a list of usable IOS rather than forcing its possibilities to one or two slots.

What are you talking about, and who are you quoting as saying "so confident lol"? You realize I have only been active on gbatemp for less than two months, right?

Anyway, it's just up to the OP to decide if he wants to patch IOS36. I've pointed out that it is needed for some old apps and it doesn't hurt to cover all bases, and you have pointed out that it isn't needed for new apps. I'm fine with whatever the OP decides.

anyhow, i did not end up patching ios36 and the mauifrog thing sounds interesting, but I dont know if i will do it on that wii. its a wii that barely gets used as is and when it is in use no one uses the HBC but me so the chances of anyone deleting the system IOS is low, but I am looking in to it. the wii i have that gets used a lot is on 4.2 and I am thinking about updating it to 4.3. if i do i will probably do the mauifrog stuff to that wii.

do you happen to have a link to a guide for the mauifrog stuff? i found a guide on wiihacks, but i dont know if was for the same thing or not.

Don't update it to 4.3! That would be really stupid, especially if you don't have the latest HBC, since you would have to buy an exploitable game. Part of mauifrog's guide is downgrading to a custom 4.1 anyway. Go here for the guide.
