I want to get roms on my DSi but have no idea how to use homebrew. I have an sd card that works for the ds, but I don't know if you need homebrew to play roms.

As for your question, I'll just quickly answer it for you so you don't need to make an entirely new thread/post.
To run backups (ROMs) on your DSi, your best bet is using custom firmware.
Here's a guide to getting CFW set up on your DSi.

Remember, don't ask for ROMs or where to find ROMs on GBAtemp, that's warez and strictly illegal. You're expected to dump your own games and run those backups.
