ROM Hack Help please: SS patched freezes when cheats active

I have searched for an answer to this on the forum and couldn't see one.
Apologies if this has been answered before...

I have an Acekard 2.
Pokemon SoulSilver patched with the "engrish" 100% translation.
Using the 8/12/09 USRCHEAT.DAT from GBAtemp.
I have matched the Patched Game ID in the file, so the Cheats screen loads.

If I leave the ROM settings as "Default", the game loads and plays, but the cheats are NOT active.
If I set the ROM settings to "Enabled", the game hangs at loading, with a white screen of death.

Please can someone advise me on what I am doing wrong?
If more information is needed please ask.
