Hacking Help me pls with my R4 >.>

im borrowing my friends old nds and r4 revolution but cant get it to seem to work :3 it just freezes at the loading screen. I dont even know what frimware i have or know the difference between kernel and frimware >.>
So can anyone guide me through this ? (￣▽￣)
