Hacking Headset

No doubt. It was not where I had sound in one earphone, which does indeed happen if you don't insert the connector entirely in some devices. Instead, I had the same channel in both ears. However, I notice that if I DO push the connector in halfway, I get the mono output for the other channel instead.

Are you supposed to need a special headset in some way? The circular connector is standard, but then I notice that there's another socket next to it for some reason that appears rectangular in shape. I'm using a standard headset.
 
I think that rectangle part is for microphone. I have ds headset and it only has one side "which is meant for right ear", and it plugs into rectangle hole and the headphone jack.
 
Please forgive me fucktardedness, my headset is actually fucked now. It's just extremely coincidental that the problem only began from the moment that I took it out of my PC and used it in my DS, hence me thinking the DS was at fault. Back in my PC, I now have the same problem.
