I wonder what would happen if we push Select on the game icon when the game is running

Actually, we know that pressing it in-game does nothing, but has anyone actually opened a game, suspended the software, and then press the button while hovering over the game icon?

In either case, pressing the flash cart's button or pressing select twice are both pretty deliberate actions. If that crashes the game, nobody to blame but yourself.
