This is very confusing I was told for months not to update because saves won't work

hmm... i don't see any reason saves would not work if you update...
if you downgrade, yes, saves can stop working because of the newer save encryption etc, but upgrading should be fine... as you just saw for yourself :D

The same thing works in reverse, if he's been playing 6.x save crypto games with an older sysNAND.

it is only via cubic ninja, that sort of homebrew, that sound was broken
I seem to remember them saying sound would not work if it was in .3ds format.

yes, i read sound only works for homebrew when installed via cia, not .3ds - i think that is for old3ds and new3ds.
but only on new3ds, ninjahax can't have sound for homebrew... right? i never used it myself.

and a 'old'/broken save encryption forced to use 4.x, does not work when the real keys are present on the system?
anyway, gw mode would not use them anyway i think, only in classic mode

True, GW mode doesn't use them, it would only be a problem for retail carts.
The way the save encryption is designed, it seems to be either one or the other. It won't autodetect which save encryption to use beyond what the header tells it to use. It wasn't designed with pirates in mind :P
