Google is shutting down its internal Stadia game development studios as it switches focus

Google Stadia has had its ups and downs since its launch in late 2019, as it edged its way into the cloud-based game streaming market, as well as game development. Yet, it seems like the latter half will soon be shuttered, as a press release from Google has revealed Stadia Games & Entertainment--SG&E, its game studio brand--will slowly wind down by the end of 2021. Rather than create games, Google appears to now want to shift focus to "building the proven technology of Stadia as well as deepening business partnerships". Jade Raymond, former producer of the first two Assassin's Creed titles, who headed SG&E will also be departing Google for new ventures, while some of the team from the Los Angeles and Montreal branches will find new roles within the company after Google restructures. For now, Google is committed to Stadia as a platform.

I am currently in the free trial period for the heck of it and it... works? I guess? It is only playable with an ethernet cable for me despite my 300 mbps down wireless, but it sure works. It just isn't something I see myself using frequently. I thought the games would load faster or something, but it seems like Google couldn't even put SSDs into their stuff. I haven't tried XCloud quite yet, but I've heard that's better.

Even though Google is shutting down their internal game development studios, I wouldn't be surprise if they shut down Stadia altogether in the near future if the player base is still non-existence compare to other platforms.

Wow that was quick. Lol
Consoles are here to stay!
LOL! You really think consoles are the competition to streaming platforms like Stadia!??? Consoles are for people without enough intelligence to use a PC. Stadia was for PC users who didn't have the GPU to run the latest games.

That's one nail in the coffin for the Stadia platform. Now just need the rest of it to die. Game streaming just isn't desirable when data caps are a thing for ISPs, let alone when you can't own the game on your own storage device.

Close enough. Without any original content, Stadia isn't long for this world. Google would've had to lay thousands of miles of fiber optic cable themselves AND produce a ton of exclusive games to make this a success.
We should treat fiber optic cable the same as telephone lines and electric lines. Have our taxes fund it, and not have only one choice of provider. That way it's even accessible to poor people.

I wish apple with their "apple arcade" gonna go next.
Apple Arcade isn’t a streaming service. Plus, considering it’s being bundled with so many different Apple plans, it seems unlikely they would have a reason to remove it any time soon.

That´s to bad, i bought a Stadia controller last christmas and it´s been working flawless for me.
I really don´t understand why people bitch about game-streaming, do they just have a really bad internet connection?

It's funny, that those who predicted Google would do this, as they always have, were shot down by those subscribing to Stadia service.

It's worth noting that Stadia isn't actually dead, they just aren't creating their own content, it's development that's being ceased. They don't really have much chance of saving the service either though.

Amazon had a better chance than Google (Google lost the plot years back, not that I hold Amazon in high esteem or anything).

But Amazon are even later to the party. It looks as though Microsoft may actually control the market, unless someone can surprise everyone (Nintendo is rumoured to be partnered for a service of their own).

I hope there is atleast some competition (not price fixing, "any illegal means will do" Sony either, although I guess Nintendo are probably worse in this respect - price fixing).

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
