jumpman17 : Yep I'm here!

I don't post much anymore, but I still am here...

And for everyone, I was sad when I was seeing how I had quite little power on this forum, but now that I can have some control over everything, I'll be having more fun here...
smile.gif
I SHOULD, as a result, be here more often than I have been in the last year...

See ya in the forums, guys and gals!

It is a good idea to have a mixed meeting but just make sure you (staff) pick wisley, perhaps nominations and a poll so we could pick who repesents us?
Maks, that would turn into a popularity contest and possible flaming could result. I would rather have the staff make the decision. Then nobody's feelings are hurt in a 0% vote for them.

wow! great choices! alot of gfx-mods that upgraded, innit?
happy.gif

as for koekie: why didn't you make him global mod before? i'm sure most of us agree that he's a very kind, respective and most important of all fair person.

what i don't see though is why gamenews6 was downgraded... but i have my suspicions (eg. not posting very much, only active in certain areas, not doing very much help)

keep it as good as it has been!
thank you!

EDIT: kotainka2, true, as many people here are underage, or maybe feel rejected in general, this would be bad

Maks, there is nothing inherently wrong with what you said. You were being creative and bringing ideas to the table. It is just better to protect from the mess that might result. No one is faulting you though. It would be nice if we lived in a world where such a thing were possible. Unfortunately, that isn't the case.

Thanks, Tyrian! GBATemp's Resident Wimp is sure you'll get there soon enough.

Anyway, back on topic.
I think the easiest way to do it (feel free to disagree) would be to have the mods and admins come up with a few nominations, probably through PMs unless there is a hidden Mod board here. Decide amongst the mods and admins on two choices, and then approach those two. Keep it private, however. This will prevent any "He said she said" or "so and so would be better" topics starting up that wouldn't help anyone. Then, after the meeting, release the notes for all to see and let everyone know that they were, indeed, represented. I'm not totally partial to the secrecy part, but I think it's probably the least controversial way of doing it. Everyone here has friends with other people, and those people are going to think their friends would do a better job over someone else's friends. This prevents all of that, as we all trust the admins and mods to be able to make an unbiased decision based off of knowledge, forethought, etc. You already have a good idea, from earlier topics, of what the people are looking for and desire, and the overall goal is to find a good compromise or decision that suits the needs of the people with the needs of the board. It ain't easy, and I don't envy ANY of you your position right now, but it can be done.
Now. The other alternative is to release the name of the two people on the board and make it clear that the decision is final. They could then open a topic and have various members state their concerns of what they would and wouldn't like to see changed. This does risk flaming or "He said she said" bouts, but it would allow for people to feel like they have a little more say in the matter. Of course, the final call would be up to the representatives and their decision would be final, but the people would have been able to speak in some way through those representatives. Basically like an electoral college, if you're familiar with that American term. Basically, it's where chosen representatives vote based off of the consensus of the individual state, if that makes any sense.
OK, this is a long, Tempest-esque post, so I'll wrap it up. These are just my thoughts, so feel free to modify, change, or delete as desired. I just want to make sure that everyone is onboard, represented, and ultimately as satisfied as possible with the final changes that are decided on. Night all.

If I'm not mistaken, I'm pretty sure when you become a mod or admin that a forum appears only for you and the other mods and admins. I'm sure many things take place there, including the status of the forum and plans for world domination.

Of course there is one, you just follow the green brick road.

Garp, surely you must know that they don't inform the little people of everything. If you venture to board 2 you won't see the administration board there either, because I decided to hide it.

EDIT: You being gbatemp
We do have the log but I very much doubt it will be released to the public

That's a long post Garp

We haven't even talked about it yet (I mean the meeting was only a few hours ago) but we'll look into having a meeting with some members of the site that are selected.

Garp, there's two other solutions here.
[*]Moderated IRC chat
[*]Forum topics

In the case of the former, one moderator would recieve every question typed, and would screen and release the messages to the mods. This method is done at many FAQ sessions. Questions will not be filtered based on who asked them, but rather on the quality of the question.

As for the latter, we would have one thread for people to designate issues with the board. Any concern at all, post it. We'll speak about our views on it, and then lock it and bring it with us to the discussion.

Both avoid the popularity contest, and what the latter lacks in real-time it makes up for in that these discussions are forum-first, not channel-first, so everyone who frequents the forums but not IRC will see them and participate if they want to without going too far out of their way. Not to mention firewalls don't block GBATemp like they do #gbatemp.

Regarding the minutes: a few issues were unresolved, and are sensitive at the moment, likely to cause conflict if released without editing. Do you want an edited log (thus entrusting us to not change anything) or a direct, unedited log with data that'll possibly cause conflict? At the moment, it's likely to stay unreleased. Everything that was actually decided was summed up on my release.

Jumpman: Yes, there is a staff forum, it's just hidden from members. And yet you seem to have found our secret plans for world domination... *dons ninja garb*

I'm really sorry i missed it. I had work today, and we don't have any IRC program (big suprise). Even if we did, i was so buisy, i didn't have time to drink the can of soda i had brought with me.

EDIT: I am happy with the upgrades. I think that the selected deserved it.

About the minutes, I would most definitely not release them. They DEFINITELY need to remain confidential to maintain peace among the members. I wasn't there, but i can only image that a release would cause trouble.

Another idea is to propose something, say, a release date, and the push it back over and over and over again!!! Yeah! That sounds like fun!:P

He knows too much! Invite Jumpman into the 'special' room, get the baseball bat ready Tempest.

@Smef, it's perfectly okay. We all have things come up that we can't avoid every now and then. You will be able to see the minutes in the secret place. You know where

I wouldn't release the logs, the meeting was for the mods and admins and they should be able to choose what info to announce as long as it remains true to the original content. An edited log never tells much.

Ummm, did I say world domination...I meant plans to raise fuzzy kittens...PLEASE DON'T KILL ME...

Exactly what I intended with my original post. Costello and I (mostly him) summarized the events into those two main topics.

Watch that third step, it's a killer.

I agree the logs should be private as of right now, at least. Until the issue is fully resolved, what is discussed behind closed doors should stay behind closed doors. No doubt about that.
Tempest, I would feel very comfortable with either of your alternatives. While it would entail a little bit more work, it would result in the same final result. There's no denying that there is a fine line to be walked here, and it will be very difficult to come up with the way that works for everyone. I'm the resident wimp, and I don't really want to jump in and take over in any way, shape, or form. If it seems that way, I apologize. I just appreciate the magnitude of what you are facing and would like to do what I can to help out with it, wherever I can. I think either one of your alternatives would work very well. I would just like to avoid any grumbling after that fact about any decision that is made. There's no doubt that some sort of compromise is going to have to be reached, as well as several sweeping changes. It's a tough job, but if you didn't think you could do it, you never would have taken the role of a moderator. Nobody should. I've been a manager with 30 people under me and had to make decisions that concerned all of them. It's a difficult thing to do, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone else if it could be helped, but the time has been reached and the call needs to be made. There needs to be more of a feeling of central security, with defined leadership. There needs to be final judgment reached on spam, posting guidelines (including language, please), and possibly slightly more liberal use of the mod abilities. Loose and easy worked when it was a small community here, but it's growing all the time and you're attracting all different types of elements. I'm impressed at how well it really is self-moderated, but can it really stay that way? I don't know, and thankfully I don't have to decide that. Like I said, I don't envy any of you.
Either way, good luck with it and just keep us "little people" informed of what's going on as much as you can (I understand that discretion would be required) and I'll be totally cool with whatever, for whatever that counts for.
