Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns was designed by David Crane and published by Activision for the Atari 2600. After being released in 1984 the game was later ported to the Atari 5200 by Mike Lorenzen. The 5200 port was titled the Adventurer's Edition and included bonus content in the form of an extra playable level.

The game once again stars Harry as he platforms through treasure collecting bliss. Unlike the first game, the sequel takes place in the caverns below the jungle. The player earns points by collecting treasure and keeps the points by avoiding enemies. Scorpions return in this sequel along with bats, condors, frogs, and electric eels. As Harry explores the caverns he will stumble across continuation points that take the form of a red colored cross. At any point when he “dies” after hitting an enemy, he will be transported back to the last touched continuation point and lose some points in the process. Reaching zero points will not kill Harry, as this version of Pitfall offers unlimited lives and unlimited continues. The game is won when Harry's pet mountain lion, Quickclaw, and his niece, Rhonda, are successfully rescued, along with a large diamond ring.

Pitfall II built upon the platforming success of its predecessor by offering more treasure, more enemies, a complex musical score, larger levels, and additional gameplay elements such as water, ladders, long drops and deep caverns. It was such a popular game that it was eventually ported to 9 additional gaming systems. The Atari 5200 and 8-bit ports took separate development paths, where the 5200 was ported based on the 2600 code which allowed for less debug time. The extra time gained from this was used to build an entirely new level that offered a greater challenge with more complexity. The extra level was released as an easter-egg as Atari did not want it included in the final product. Along with a new maze of corridors, this level included rabid bats that fly in unpredictable patterns, frogs that chase after the player, fire ants and piranhas. The second level can only be beat after Harry collects a pot, a trumpet, a rope, and a snake charmer. The charmer will play the instrument which causes the rope to rise from the pot, allowing Harry to escape the second maze and complete the game.

The same great feeling of adventure is present in Pitfall II as it was in the original Pitfall title. The addictive gameplay is both challenging and fun, while the musical score will have you humming a tune long after the game has been turned off. If you have never experienced a classic Pitfall adventure then Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns Adventurer's Edition is where you should start.

Very fond memories of me playing this with a bunch of mates, we were only 8 years old and while I had an Amiga, one had a Mega Drive, another a SNES and the rich kid a Neo Geo this was the one we tried to beat.

I miss the days Activision were cool.

Pitfall 2 was amazing at the time.
Where the first one lacked (cheap collision detection deaths and some near impossible jumps imho.) the second one fixed and expanded the gameplay. One of the top Atari games ever.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@AncientBoi, Yeah, believe you can do PSP games as well. But a Pi5 is much powerful in comparison.

Not sure about other models of Pi4 but the Pi 4 B with 8GBs OCed to 2Ghz handles PSP really great except like 1 game I found and it is playable it just looks bad lol Motor Storm Arctic something or other.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Other games I can have turned up to like 2X and all kinds of enhancements, Motorstorm hmmm nope 1X and no enhancements lol

Waiting for Anbernic's rg[whatever]SP price announcement, gimme.

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I will admit that one does seem more interesting than the usual Ambernic ones, and I already liked those.
  • Veho @ Veho:
    I dread the price point.

  • Veho @ Veho:
This looks like one of their premium models, so... $150 :glare:

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    To me that seems reasonable.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I mean since basically all the games are errmmm free lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean yeah sure but the specs are the same as a $50 model, it's just those pesky "quality of life" things driving up the price, like an actually working speaker, or buttons that don't melt, and stuff like that.

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think all in my Pi 4 was well north of 200 bucks 150ish for the Pi 4 the case the fancy cooler, then like 70 for the 500GB MicroSD then like 70 for the Xbox controller. But honestly it's a nice set up I really enjoy and to me was worth every penny. (even bought more controllers for 2 or 4 player games.) hmmm have never played any 2 player games yet :(
  • Veho @ Veho:
Yeah that's what I hate about the RPi, it's supposedly $30 or something but it takes an additional $200 of accessories to actually turn it into a working something.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
yes that's the expensive part lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I mean sure it's flexible and stuff but so is uremum but it's fiddly.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah a lot of it I consider a hobby, using Batocera I am constantly adjusting the collection adding and removing stuff, scraping the artwork. Haven't even started on some music for the theme... Also way down the road I am considering attempting to do a WiiFlow knock off lol
  • Veho @ Veho:
I want everything served on a plate plz ktnx, "work" is too much work for me.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Hmm, with that in mind, maybe a complete out-the-box solution with all the games collected, pacthed and optimized for me would be worth $150
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah it's all choice and that's a good thing :)
