This week three great DS homebrew titles

    GBAtemp Recommends! homebrew

    Meteora, POWDER and LemmingsDS

Welcome to the first GBAtemp recommends! homebrew post.
While many of you will be aware of homebrew games there are still those who push it to the back of their mind so we decided to showcase some you can play with now while E3 is busy pumping out hype and the summer games drought about to kick off.
Homebrew sits in a rather interesting position compared to commercial games and without the pressures of making money, deadlines and the ability to test things beforehand some very interesting but perhaps otherwise unviable games and remakes of older games can appear. They are also frequently quite small and as such can make for great "cart fillers". This week three DS homebrew titles, picking just three was a very hard task and indeed there is plenty more available for future posts. With that out of the way onto the matter at hand:

    1)Meteora from Jérôme Wax.

Nobody has yet really been able to describe the gameplay but we shall try, think of a cross between populous, space invaders, world of sand and pong. You play as a god in control of a planet and magical powers, your job is to defeat an opposing planet by firing spells and defending your own planet. Above all the game features one of the best uses of stylus control across all DS games homebrew or otherwise.
It features single player story mode with various difficultly levels, multiplayer with two DS and marathon mode.

    2)POWDER from Jeff Lait

Developed over the course of many years now POWDER is a roguelike built from scratch, for those new to the roguelikes they take their name from a game released in the early 1980s called Rogue (other notable rougelikes include Hack and Nethack which both have DS ports). It could be argued that they are the precursor to the RPGs of today and certainly games like Diablo owe a great deal to them. They are usually turn based (POWDER is) and tend to use simple graphics or even ASCII characters instead of tiles (you have the option of several tilesets or ASCII for POWDER).
Often known for being very complex and very hard POWDER definitely counts those two among the features.
Between commercial games and homebrew there are several roguelike games to choose from but POWDER stands above pretty much all of them.

    3)LemmingsDS

Most gamers will have heard of lemmings at some point but for those that have not Lemmings is a puzzle game from DMA Design (yes the very same people who are now known as Rockstar North and make GTA and Manhunt). In it you control you order lemmings to do various things (climb walls, build bridges, dig tunnels, redirect other lemmings.....) to enable the other lemmings to reach the exit.
The DS port is a near flawless recreation and features all the levels from the original Amiga Lemmings, Oh-No! More Lemmings and all levels from Xmas Lemmings ‘91, ‘92, ‘93 and ‘94.
As well as that there is a level editor.

StillAlive DS is the best homebrew game on the ds IMO. I came here hoping to see it but.. maybe on the next issue? [IMG]

I played lemmings and meteora, both great games.
Powder looks good too, might give it a try.

EDIT: BTW, thank you FAST. Awesome first issue [IMG]

I've played Powder off and on since it's first release... each version gets better and better. If you like Shiren or Pokemon Mystery Dungeons, it's definitely worth a look.

Got that right, StillAlive DS is definitely one of the best homebrews out there.
As well as Tower of Defense by Noda, DSOrganize, Lameboy, nesDS, Magic Touch, Crocodingus In Cube Island, A Touch Of War, ChessNET, ....
    Ah too much to mention!

I just thought of another game that should be featured: Video Game Hero... that was the best homebrew game I have played my entire time being on the DS Homebrew scene since 2005.

Just picked up Lemmings, pretty fun game. Tons of levels make it worth keeping for a while. I'll try out the rest sometime, great job on this.
