But man, now that I started watching their actual press conference, I must say that listening to the "reporters" acting enthusiastic really feels quite cheesy. Though at least maybe not as much as the "kids acting like they enjoy the Kinect" video from a while back.

So glad the PS4 lived up to some of it's expectation. Was really worried that this gen was going to be ruined by the media side of these consoles. PS4 looks like a top product and the no DRM has sealed it. By the end of this year I will be a PS4 owner.

Also a price point like that for a new Sony console is awesome, the PS3 was so overpriced originally, they obviously learned their lesson.

They have to be losing some serious money on this though. Nintendo sells the Wii U for less than it costs to make.

I'm sure that all consoles are sold at a loss? The money is made from Game/accessories sales

No they aren't. In fact, I believe the PS3 was the only one last generation that sold at loss.

What do you mean by "as long"? Unless the hardware changes, the amount lost will stay the same.

Hardware gets cheaper with time, so as they continue to produce it and sell it at the same price, their losses fall until eventually they start making money for each new unit sold.

As for the Wii U, I thought that they were taking a small loss on it this go around (though probably wouldn't take long to get back into the black on hardware), which is unusual as they typically make money on their hardware.

The exact same hardware continues to stay the same price. If they switch it out for an alternative (or cut out a huge chunk like they did with the PS3), then it is less expensive.
