Hacking GBA ROMs - adding cheats

Total noob with CycloDS Evo v1.54B and EZFlash 3in1+. I can play NDS and GBA roms, enable cheats for NDS games but I cannot seem to be able to get patched GBA games to work. I downloaded the noname GBA cht database and used either CycloDS ROM Patcher or GBAATM. The latter program always crashes immediately after patching. The patched games made with the ROM Patcher freeze soon after starting. I've spent hours searching but cannot find any usefull answers, so hope there maybe someone who can guide me.
