When I try to dump the rom of the cart, Donkey Kong Country Returns to my SD I get an "An error occurred, press A to exit". Why is this? My SD card is 4gb, should be of size. And its formatted to fat32.

Actually, your SD card is probably not big enough. The ROM dump is 4.29 GB (untrimmed) according my computer. Also, if you are running emuNAND, you actually have around 1 GB less space available on your SD card.

Too small.
your rom size, 2^32 bytes, is larger than your card size (~4,000,000,000 bytes)

Wow, ok thank you. I will have to get a 16 gb SD card then. I remember that the SD card needed to be formatted on the 3ds itself, how do I do this? Or do I plug the SD card in when the 3ds is off, then turn the 3ds on and it will prompt me to format the SD card so that it works with the 3ds? Is this correct?

The 3ds just adds a few system files, it doesn't format the card. Use SD formatter on your PC for that. fat32 is good enough. You can also use exFAT (right click-> format on SD drive) for unlimited file size and slightly faster read/write speeds. (exfat is intended for the GW microSD but i heard it works for the 3ds SD as well, but i'm not totally sure)

Basically, if you put the new SD card in the 3DS and turn it on, it will create the file directories that it needs automatically. You can then just copy and paste everything over. Just note that if you have emuNAND set up that you will have to use the emuNAND extraction tool that can be found in the maxconsole support forum (you may be able to find it elsewhere, but that is where I downloaded it first.)

Edit: Now I am the one who got ninja'ed.

I have read that the SD card needs to be in fat32. But I will try it, thank you.

I just succesfully dumped Donkey Kong Country returns to the SD card, now I have 2 files named AYTE.3D0 & AYTE.3D1. What do I do with them?

Put them both on the microSD card. The ROM dumper split the file since it was so big.

I guess play with them. :p

They go side by side on your microSD and gw will detect and play them as a single rom.

Thats not how I expected it to be, its now a 2 rom game? With no way to merge yet huh? Also, after dumping the rom, while in gateway menu, if I turned the power off to the system, does this corrupt anything? Did I have to go into gateway mode, then when at home screen select power to off?

Gateway knows that both files belong to the same ROM. It only split the ROM due to it's size. Do not alter the names.

As long as you did not power off in the middle of the dumping process, powering off should not corrupt anything. You can power off as you usually do.

I cant change the name to donkey kong? and there already is a spliter tool!

The splitter tool is for writing ROMs to a FAT32 formatted microSD card that exceeds the file size limit, which is most likely why the Gateway software splits the larger ROMs when it writes them to a FAT32 formatted SD card.

I guess that you can try renaming the file; however, I have never tried to rename a split ROM file. It's always worth a shot if you are willing to do it.

I haven't tested this with .3ds files, but you could theoretically combine them into a single .3ds using the command line in Windows. I used to do this with PS2 ISOs that were split into multiple files without issue, so it may also work with .3ds.

1. Place both files in the same folder.
2. Open a command prompt window and go to the directory with the two files
3. Enter the following command: copy AYTE.3d* AYTE.3ds
4. Move the newly created .3ds to your mSD
5. Hopefully, it should recognize it as a valid rom.

EDIT: You should be able to rename them without issue so long as each file has the exact same name before the .3d0/3d1

The resulting 4GB file will break fat32 though. That's why GW split them in the first place.

I think that he was talking about remerging them to write to a exFAT microSD card (although he did not specify that specifically.)

The red card can handle exFAT though. Plus, I highly doubt that his computer is running off a FAT32 HDD in this day and age. Guess I could have been a little bit clearer.

Named both the dumped roms to Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, and it works. Thank you.
