Hacking Gateway Blue Card and 8.1

Has anyone been able to use the blue GW cart with FW 8.1?
My cousin with a 2DS on 8.1 wants to borrow the cart for DS games, but can't seem to use it as he gets an error as soon as he tries to start it.

I'm guessing the development for the Wood Kernel has stalled indefinitely?

Has nothing to do with wood, the card cant be updated to support the newest firmware
