Hacking Gateway and 3DS 4.1-4.5 fw? Still the best?

Sorry for asking this but the threads and 3DS info is so old not sure what has changed.

From what I have read the Gateway is the best 3DS flash cart? And you need FW 4.1-4.5?

I am thinking of buyng a 3DS XL w/ 4.5 (there are tons of ebay) and getting a Gateway cart. I just want to make sure that's still the way to go?
