First of all, if this is in the wrong section I do apologise and please could someone be so kind and move it. :)

My question, is there anyway what so ever we can play roms online? For example if like to play pokemon y online and trade mainly, if this is possible how do I go by doing this?

Sorry if this has been asked before and thank you.

I'm not really sure what that means. When you say patch rom you mean trimming or patch with anti piracy patches so that it runs? If the latter, then that means it's not possible to go online as you'd be resetting your progress everytime.

To play online, you have to "patch" the header of the rom. Once you do this, you can't use any old saves you had for that rom. That's what he means.

think of it like this, there is the normal rom with no online key (header), then there are roms with a "online access key" injected into them.....the "online key" is also tied to the save, so the save made with no "online key" will not be able to be used once a online key is added to the rom.....it also means if you swap online keys for any reason the save will be unusable again

Ah, so basically add the online header and don't make anymore changes with the rom and it'll be just like any regular cart. Not sure why you'd swap the online key if it worked to begin with.

basically say if you use a random publicly shared key and then nintendo blocks the shared key(or you just decided you would feel more comfortable using a personal header), at that point if you then wanted to switch to a personal dumped key you would have to start over.....or say if you use a random header either personally dumped or a public one and ever decide to delete the rom from the SD card, then a few months later decide you want to play again, the only way to carry on with your old save is if you have a copy of the key used to create that save

I suppose that makes sense. Guess there is no safe method unless you don't need to go online. The whole header thing won't matter for local play I assume?

no offline play works fine without a header at all, best practice would be sticking to a personal header from a game you own....but even then nobody truly knows what nintendo plans to do, but really there is only a really a handful of games that even have online function......but so far nothing at all has been done in terms of blocking/banning so its just a waiting game for something that might never even happen......my advice is to just enjoy online as you would....if it gets blocked it would get blocked regardless

I dumped my copy of pokemon y onto my 3ds gateway, put it onto the computer and my friend patched the header for me but when I load the game it comes up with a grey screen basically saying save corrupted and it doesn't load anything. Would anybody know the reason?

If you dumped your own copy, why have you patched the ROM ??
You only need to change the extension from 3ds to 3dz.

For the corrupted save file, this is normal. You cannot use your older save because of the different save encryption. You must reinit the ROM save file with UP +B +X.

.....unless he played the game in classic mode, then simply dumping the ROM and renaming to.3dz will let him use his save from the cart

Yes that is true, but I expected he was a new Gateway user. ;)

Ah, and that is impossible for now to play Pokémon XY online, unless the patch was downloaded on the eShop when the emunand had an access. It is necessary to wait for the new Gateway update release.

Nah that's fine mate I understand. Basically I had the game on my older 3ds and updated. I have a new 3ds now just to be able to play gateway as it's in a low firmware unlike my old one. Hopefully in the future pokemon y will be able to go online. Fingers crossed
