this is exactly what has happened

was on 4.2.0-9 then updated with a 4.5.0 Firmware Title

thus updating it to 4.5.0-9

the final digit is purely Online Features version number

i have a 3DS on 4.5.0-0 and 4.5.0-4

When I bought my 3ds xl 2 months ago it was 4.2.0-9 out of the box. In anticipation of getting a gateway (or R4i) I borrowed Donkey Kong Country returns and updated and it gave me 4.5.0-9. When I noticed that this firmware didn't seem to exist on the list I started panicking that I did something wrong, especially since I could have left it at 4.2. Anyway, R4i was ordered and used and now I also have Gateway and there seems to be no issues. I even tried to get it up to 4.5.0-10, by re borrowing the DK and even trying Luigis mansion but both games did not show the update screen.

Just to add to this bit of an older thread, My brothers 3DS is on a 4.5.0-9U 3ds
And to be honest, thats how it came from a trade in store for 2nd hand gaming.

we both kinda shit ourselfs like "dafuq"
but we updated it with a cart a -10u system
so cant say if its going to work or not.

but it updated, so its different, will it work? try it
if not, buy, trade, borrow a -10u game

now only if i can find a 4.5 or lower console myself. lol

Straight from Wikipedia.

Note that the nomenclature of a firmware version, as it's shown on the 3DS System Settings, is divided in three parts: the first 3 digits represent the firmware version without eShop features (which is the one stored on retail cartridges); the number after the dash represents improvements related to the eShop and can only be obtained via online update; and finally the letter at the end represents the region of the console, being the Americas (U), Europe and Australia (E), Japan (J), South Korea (K) and Taiwan (T) the five regions with exclusive firmwares for each one.
