I have been following this thread for the past couple of weeks or so. I just wanted to share that you guys hyped this flashcard up so much I just bought a 3DS XL. I guess it will keep me entertained until Nintendo starts expanding the selection of Wii U games. I still haven't decided if I want to spring for this flashcard yet. I think the biggest factor would be if the 3DS XL I just bought (used from CowBoom by the way) is on firmware prior to 6.0.0-11U. I still can't believe all of the complaining I saw regarding this flashcard over the past couple of weeks. It is the FIRST commercially available 3DS flashcard, it is understandable for it to lack features and have limitations such as: one game per microSD card, one save file and to currently have compatibility issues with the new firmware. Any advice or tips for a new 3DS owner?

Turn wi-fi off, so you don't accidentally update. And other than that, keep your eyes peeled on the front page for Gateway news when it occurs. They'll be able to tell you if/when it is safe to update.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it. I probably don't need to worry about turning off Wi-Fi though because my home network is Wireless-N only and the best the 3DS can do is Wireless-G. I got around the limitation with my DS Lite only using Wireless-B by taking an old Linksys access point and connecting it to the Wireless-N router and setting the access point to broadcast Wireless-B only. I should probably do the same for the 3DS except this time, change it to Wireless-G.

The system supports 2.4 GHz 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity with enhanced security WPA2.

if that is correct then his plan is flawed.

Oh I see.

But really, it doesn't really matter, just keep your wifi off. I rarely turn it on myself.

But then again, I have been getting those "pop-up" update screens even in offline mode. Freaking hate those.

It's also better to have wifi off to save battery power - of course having the Nyko PowerPak helps a ton with that too. I don't remember if it's been covered earlier in the thread, but I do wonder what kind of battery power the Gateway will require...

I don't think it has its own processor, so I can't imagine it taking that much more power, if at all. I don't actually worry about battery power, though. I use my DS as a portable home console, and it's either connected to the charger or the charger's a few feet away. And the 3DS will be the same.

Doesn't matter, turn wireless off, along with streetpass, spotpass, and any and all automatic downloads. Do not allow that 3DS to communicate with anything.

Is there no way to play online games (like MK7) and still avoid updates? I thought you only NEEDED to update to visit the E-shop, I thought you could still play online with old firmwares.

MK7 is, I think, the only game released that needs a DLC to play online. If you don't have that DLC already downloaded, you need the eshop to get it. But you can't use the eshop unless you're on the latest firmware. So, I don't think MK7 is a good example, but other than that game I think you're right.

That is partially correct. My main routers broadcast Wireless-N only and a secondary access point I have connected broadcasts in Wireless-B. The 3DS can connect to my access point, not the main routers though. Attached is an easy to understand diagram of my setup. And no, my plan is nowhere near "flawed". I thought you guys would know a thing or two about basic networking.

That is a clear and concise answer. I was looking at the 3DS features and it turns out that if you happen to enter a "Nintendo Zone" with Wi-Fi on then it connects automatically and can download stuff. It didn't say system updates in particular, I would think it does though. It is just as sneaky as WiiConnect24 on the Wii, except this time it connects automatically. I'll be sure to turn Wi-Fi off when I receive it. How about multiplayer though? I used it a lot on my DS Lite.

They said that GW3DS would be ready in July. Something went wrong. What a shame. I feel deceived and disappointed. Shame on you liars from GR2DS;P

MK7 is, I think, the only game released that needs a DLC to play online. If you don't have that DLC already downloaded, you need the eshop to get it. Cool, so to confirm- if connected via Wifi, you will only be forced to take the latest FW if you want to use the eshop? So why all the advice to disconnect wifi (and give up online multiplayer), if you can decline the update?

It's not that you can decline it when it asks, it's the annoyance of it popping up to apply the update randomly when opening the 3DS. If you accidentally click A or Yes, then you are SOL.
