I'm assuming there's no way still to play this game without downloading it on the e-shop?

If you do so, is there anyway to backup the game in case you change 3ds consoles or something?

it works fine. although I also want to know whether I could re-download it if I bought it in eshop if I formatted my emunand

The rom works fine so no need to redownload it, download that instead but yes you should be able to redownload any previous purchases as always, but not sure if you are going to create a new emuNAND
