Gaming has become a chore.

Up until a few months ago, my gaming was going rather well, I could sit down and play a game for a few hours, and it was an enjoyable experience. I recently decided to play through the entire Metroid saga in chronological order, and made it up to Metroid Prime Hunters.

Then I delved into the muddled world of Brawl hacking. I now have a ton of brawl hacks that I'm trying to sift through, weeding out the bad ones, all the while picking up new ones from the month before. It doesn't help that I don't have internet, and have to go to the library to download the things I need to, or that I only have a few hours, usually from 1 to maybe 5 in the morning to fiddle with my wii, due to my work and tv schedule. (I like my shows) I have gamefly, and get a couple new wii games each week, plus a ton of games and emulators.

But I feel I've become a collector more than a player. I think I fear getting to engrossed in anything with a plot because I don't have the time to enjoy it the way that I should. Anyone else have this problem?

If TV takes precedence over gaming...you should probably stop gaming.
Or, you could find a good therapist to help you work through this difficult time.

Get new/better games. Your experience seems to be with games that are relatively old. Hunters is bad and there's been a lot of games since Brawl.

Play some new shit son. Buy a new console if you have the cash and dive into the magical world of... a new console.

I'm going to start out like everyone above me with "stop gaming" but with a twist:
Stop gaming how you normally do.

Try to find games that have plots like your TV shows.

I'd suggest just about anything from Rockstar Games. Especially Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire. If Wii is all you've got, get Bully.
The Phoenix Wright series is another good choice.

The quality of my games isn't the issue. My problem is I am unable to let a deep game consume me because I WANT to hack Brawl, but don't have the time/resources to do it efficiently. I'm not really asking for an end all be all answer to my problem, I'm just making conversation :/

it's very easy and possible to game with heavy time constraints. Hell, a good RPG would last weeks like that.
I think Valkyria Chronicles 2 lasted me three months or so because I only played it in pretty small bursts.

By the sounds of it, gaming isn't a chore, you're just making it a chore. Plus you seem to be focusing on playing a wii...which is humorous at best.

Even when I was working 50 hour or so weeks I was keeping up with my gaming.

if you start out with such a statement like gaming is a chore, you are asking for these reactions.

eventually, hacking brawl is going to become boring again too, and the other games wont run away from you.

Get some new hobbies to do when you get bored of playing games, so you don't "force" yourself to play games when you really don't want to. Whenever I get bored of gaming, or working on my game(s), I watch stuff on Netflix or TV, listen to music, browse the internet, etc.

I know what you mean though. It's happened to me before. Just take a break from gaming for a while, do something else, and when you go to play games, you'll [hopefully] enjoy playing it.

Consider whether hacking Brawl is something you want to do or just a habit, a routine you've gotten into each month. Perhaps it's time to move on, playing the same game over and over must be pretty dull.

There are times when I really just don't want to play games for a couple of weeks, I either spend that time talking with friends or working on other projects, etc. Gaming really shouldn't feel like a chore, its a leisure.

If I don't feel like gaming, I play guitar. If I don't feel like playing guitar, I game. Then there's the whole "family" and "job" thing, kind of have to fit them in there somewhere.

TBH, a lot of people simply grow out of gaming. When you realize there are more important things in life hobbies start to take a backseat.

Hum... Gaming has never been a chore for me, but a hobby, just like Kendo and Karate, they're hobbies I have and do them during my free time, since I'm an RPG gamer mostly, I've been playing all the english rpg's for the Snes (either translated or localized) since in my opinion, is the best console ever made (or the console with the best games ever made), but I don't always play those classics and I often vary, I have this tendacy to try games that GameSpot gives low scores (scores under 7) because I often like that kind of game like Enchanted Arms for the 360 for example... Don't play the same game or the same saga all the time, just vary... The moment you don't game for fun, but still game, it means you're getting sick and should visit a doctor for your addiction. =3
