Hello! So, I had an issue with my black GC controller, in that when I tried to play melee with it, it kept shielding by itself, making the game unplayable.

I downloaded a homebrew gamecube controller tester for Wii, and confirmed that the right trigger is activated to approximately ~170 out of 220 on the analog slider. The digital right trigger button is not pressing itself automatically.

I took the controller apart, and cleaned the contacts circled in red with isopropyl alcohol. I also disassembled the right trigger module further, and cleaned around the inside a little bit with alcohol as well. There didn't appear to be any foreign objects or obvious issues with the right trigger module.

I also plugged the top half of the controller into the console without the shoulders being connected at all, to rule out major issues like PCB shorts. There was no analog shoulder activation at all when the shoulder button is physically removed.

Any ideas on what I can do next to try to resolve this issue?

If there's no issue with the button itself, then the electronic component related should be replaced.

Unless you know what you're doing I'd advice against even trying as you might damage the PCB.

Before going through that route try this. Rub some pencil on the electronic contact point of the button and try using it.

I've modchipped a PS2, this contact point looks easy enough to replace compared to that, if I have to.

I'll try the pencil trick first though. Thanks!
Nintendo OEM, or knock-off controller?
OEM, DOL-003

I took it apart while testing it to see what would happen. It definitely has nothing to do with the contact on the board, as that is only touched for the R button press, it's just the slider for the trigger. It is behaving erratically, randomly moving around from 250 activation to 1 and everywhere in between, just by jiggling it a little bit in place.

I'm not sure if the slider itself is reasonably replaceable or repairable..

definitely the problem is the "slider", they are potentiometers and you can replace it with new ones.
I personally recommend repairing, but there are people who prefer to buy a new controller.
