Saif al-islam Gaddafi was slain today in his home. The son of Muammar Gaddafi, aged 53, was killed by unknown assailants who first dismantled his security cameras.

Saif had been educated in London and was at one time heir apparent to succeed his father. After the 2011 revolution he was imprisoned by rebels following his father's death. He had been charged by the international criminal court - but never apprehended by international forces.

He was eventually released by rebels, and had attempted to run in the aborted 2021 presidential election. Libya is set to have a repeat election in 2 months, and Saif had been the leading candidate.

Clearly whoever killed him was not interested in another Gaddafi running Libya.
