PS1/2 Free McBoot Problem

I have a Playstation 2 Slim (SCPH-70012) and an Action Replay Evo (with Media Player) and I'm trying to install Free McBoot onto my memory card.

I follow this first tutorial, and once I get to the step of booting the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF file from the USB drive - and I select play on the file, and it just goes to a blank screen and nothing happens.

Am I doing anything wrong? Am I missing a step? Any help is greatly appreciated!

PS: Also tried the other methods. Getting the same problem.

I tried with the USB drive it included, and a Kingston Datatraveler (1st generation).
This COULD be the issue - I'm going to be trying to do this on my friend's ps2 and troubleshoot some more.
