Also, is there any benefit to downgrading? Ive never done something like that and i want to know the benefits of it.

I have two O3DS systems (1 is 4.5 with a Gateway, the other is 5.1 with a DSTwo Supercard). Obviously the Gateway was bought to play .3ds files and I use the other O3DS to play DS games (I prefer the round direction pad to the pad on my old DSi). I really really want to play Xenoblade Chronicles though so I guess one has to go, I really can't justify having 3 3DS systems, especially for only 1 sodding game.

I just there was an "all in one" card that would let me play .3ds .ds and so on. I also have installed CIAs using the .3ds version of BigBlueMenu but that's all I've done to these systems.

Gateway can do that; You'll use the blue card to run DS games through the sysnand, and the red card to run .3ds roms on emunand. You can also install .cia to gw emunand.
By having your sysnand on 9.0-9.2, you won't need the DS profile exploit to easily launch gateway mode (you can set menuhax + ctrbootmanager). For playing 3ds games you would just boot into gateway mode (on emunand) and run either games installed as .cia or .3ds roms through your gateway red card. For playing DS roms, you'd boot into sysnand with the blue card inserted and launching the labyrinth game (which leads to the rom selection menu). Note that for using the blue card, you'd need to install bluecardfix.cia into your sysnand, which can be done by using rxtools pasta + fbi.

You can always use safesysupdater to verify the files, and then use sysupdater for the downgrade (i did with mine)
That's what I did too because I couldn't get SafesysUpdater to work. I think it was one of the older builds at the time.

I just went digging around under the cushions of my sofa to see if there's a 3DS or PS3 or something jammed in there, but all I found were some old Cheetos and a paperclip. :(

I've tried swapping out the two cards before but after using the Gateway'ed 3DS with the DStwo Supercard I have to "reinstall" Gateway with the Gateway .ds file which is a bit of a drag. I realise this might well not be an issue for the Gateway blue card (which is round here someplace, I never use it) but that's just a standard R4 card right? The DSTwo card is pretty good for emus etc and I'd miss those.

Yea, sadly. But you can prob use it instead of the blue card on sysnand

You could

1. Go outside and not use the o3ds

2. you could break it

3. you could sell it

4. you could die

5. you could look around the forums to find out
