Format HDD on Wii U

So i tried today, to format my HDD(WD My Passport Ultra 1tb) on my Wii U, but it couldn‘t format it.
When i tried, it shut down, sayed it failed, or displayed an error.

A cable with one plug that goes into the drive, but two USB type A (rectangular) plugs on the other end. One carries data, and the other just supplies power (similar to the extra plug on the GC controller adapter that powers the rumble). Some drives need more power than the Wii U can supply to a single port.
