Hope you're ready to wait your ass off

Iwata: The first thing (Nobuo) Nagai-san10, who's in charge at the Uji plant, said to me when he looked over the designs for Nintendo 3DS before mass production began was "This time it's fully packed right from the start."

Sugino: Oh, really? (laughs) But he was right. That's why we don't have any short-term plans for creating a more compact version of Nintendo 3DS like we did with Nintendo DS Lite. (laughs)

Iwata: Yeah. (laughs) When making Nintendo 3DS, we used all our tricks for Nintendo DS Lite—and more—for cutting down on size right from the start.

I'm glad about this.

I'm tired of Nintendo releasing a handheld only to release a smaller version of it every few months.

So you don't think you'll learn any new tricks in the next 2 years? Besides the DSlite was a flimsy POC - how many broken hinge/shoulder button stories have we heard - and yet my Phat is still in perfect operating condition after 5+ years of heavy usage.

Technology gets smaller over time, though.
They'll probably find a way to fit all the components into a smaller package after about 2 years.

Oddly enough, my Phat's hinge broke much faster than that of my lite. Besides, it's not like my lite isn't in working condition without a repair. My Phat, however lost all top screen response including sound.

Am I the only one who thinks the 3DS already looks too 'lite'?

Some people don't know how to take care of their consoles.

I have to agree with him, though.
The DS Lite is not durable at all. The hinge breaks easily.

do you really belive they would say that they have plans to produce a LITE version?
They want to sell now, not in 2 years.

IIRC, Nintendo started working on the Wii's successor right after the Wii came out.
Nintendo likes to think ahead. They're probably working on the next revision of the 3DS as we speak.

History says a new revision of a Nintendo handheld is released every 1.5 - 2 years. It's just a way of Nintendo saying "Don't wait for something that may or may not ever come". I'm inclined to believe there will be a 3DS Lite and they're simply trying to boost sales. It may not necessarily be a Lite version, but it will be upgraded somehow, whether it's a sleeker design, better battery life, different OS. There's always something they can and will add. Let's be real, the 3DS is not as sleek as the DS Lite or the DSi and I'm guessing that's an intentional move.

Personally, I'm going to wait the 2 years or so just because I'm not so eager to get a 3DS right now. Maybe in a year and a half I will, but by then I'll just wait for the next revision.

I don't think it will be a Lite because the DSi on the brightest setting was enough to light up a small room and part of the reason the DS Lite was created was for a brighter screen. I think they'll just skip to the "i" quality version this time around. Either way, I'll probably upgrade if there are actual hardware changes that actually do something important (seriously, the DS Lite and DSiXL were a waste of time, I only got an XL because my DSi broke, and I only got a DSi because my DS broke, though I thought about getting a DSi anyway).
