I am unsure if I am going to continue onto the next gen. I have played, loved and collected video games for 22 years now and I am very disappointed in the next gen consoles. For the past couple of years I have seen a community of developers/publishers turn from love for the game to all about the money. Every FPS seems the same, every sports game lacks in features with every new release and more sequels a no new IPs. Microsoft, Sony & Nintendo have disappointed me in one way or another over the past few months. Microsoft tacking on restrictions, high price tag, no interesting new features and lacking innovation. Sony, seems to have the cards to sweep this gen but just like MS the PS4 lacks in innovation, same controller, same look and same features. Nintendo, I do own a Wii U and enjoy it but I feel as if the only good games are going to be all 1st party games and again, no new and original titles. Also, eventually gaming will all be done from cloud and then you never actually own anything, you are just renting until servers go down or you are banned from that service. The past generations of consoles was a no-brainer I would purchase any and all gaming consoles because they had new features/games to experience but the new gen feels that its lacking.

I can see the negative comments coming already, but thats how I see the next gen.

It's going to be a loooooooonnnnnng time before Cloud gaming/digital distribution becomes the only way.

Also... don't you think it's kind of early to be judging consoles? :/

If we don't judge it now, speak our minds, it DEFINITELY won't change :/

At least this way we have a bit of a chance of things changing for the better.

Thats the point, I shouldn't have to judge yet but like I said every console in the past offered a new and innovative experience and it no longer feels that way it its just disappointing. I hope I am wrong and change my mind when the consoles near release. Also, cloud gaming may be awhile but it will happen eventually. It just my opinion and I still love video games.

Xbox One has a lot of innovations. Multi-tasking on a game console? Kinect support by default? Games tied to your online account instead of disks? Digitally sharing games? A ton of "second screen" content enhancers? There's a ton of innovation going on there. But we all hate Microsoft now so that doesn't count.

The PS4 does seem a little bit like more of the same, just with better graphics, but apparently that's what people wanted (no surprise, people resist change), so I guess that's always nice. The last 30 years of gaming evolution can't be wrong, right?

And the WiiU is, of course, a Nintendo console, which means it gets the killer IP that is Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, and Metroid. That's been pretty much the same since Nintendo consoles ever existed (excluding the "Dream Team" matchup of Rare and Nintendo in the N64 era), and quite honestly I'm fine with that. Nintendo games are great, they give the fans what they want, and they continually innovate. Asymmetrical multiplayer and a second screen by default? That's a pretty awesome concept if developers can handle it in a decent way. Just look at the DS.

Honestly, I think if you pay attention to the hype and just see "DRM, DRM, USED GAEMS, DRM, DRM, KINECT SPYING, REGION FREE, OTHER USELESS SHIT" then you will definitely not be able to get excited about this new generation. If you actually take the time and sit down, read about the consoles, and look at the gameplay experiences they will offer (which in the end, is the important thing), there's a lot to get excited about.

Those features of the XboxONE is new to that console, i've already seen multitasking elsewhere and I've seen what the Kinect can do and all it really has is improvements. It just all feels like i've seen and done it but again its just an opinion now and it may change.

I apologize if my comment about Nintendo was misleading, Nintendo is very innovative and I do love the games they provide, honestly gaming would be horrible and all about violence if it wouldn't for Nintendo's titles. Other than Nintendo's games it seems as if splitscreen has died and everything multiplayer or co-op experience requires multiple copies of a game. I can honestly say, without Nintendo in the gaming industry at all I am done and I will stop gaming in most ways. Anything else I may have said excludes Nintendo's handheld systems, I thought the DS/3DS were amazing and one of the most innovative and fun ways to play since I started gaming.

As for "paying attention" I don't pay attention to all the bullshit, I don't listen to reviews, scores or ratings. Some of the best titles were rated extremely low on most review websites. I just hope that games will again catch my attention like they use to and after 22 years of gaming its hard to believe that I'm actually having second thoughts on buying an XboxONE or PS4. I do appreciate the insight and opinion, maybe i'm just hoping for someone to change my mind. Worst case scenario, I built a gaming PC and stick with that and Nintendo.

I'm in the same boat as you, man.

Although I can appreciate the advances that come with the new consoles, most of the titles for the Xbox One and PS4 are going to be released on PC as well, so it seems a much better idea to me to just invest the extra money in a beefy computer that you could use for things other than gaming as well. You can also use an Xbox controller to play the games on your PC, so...

Basically, the WiiU is the only console that has exclusive games I'm interested enough in to buy.

We will see, though. Like you, I'm getting older, so I really don't "game" as much anymore, so that may be influencing my opinion. I feel like "hardcore gamers" are of the 15-18 age group, because past that, you simply don't have the time anymore.

Speaking as a gamer who owned the old Pong machines when they were new, I remember how gaming used to be and it isn't like that anymore. I haven't bought a console since the PS1 and likely will never buy one again.

Games have become too self-important for their own good. They are more worried about DRM, padding the initial purchase price with DLC and forcing you to log in somewhere to track and ultimately profit from YOUR personal data than the actual games themselves now.

Why I still bother to talk about gaming is only because I do still love playing games, but I don't appreciate all the games they play on you to play a game now. Kinda leaves me on the outside looking in......and feeling concerned for all the younger gamers who don't know any better than the current state of the gaming industry and how they are ripping people off left-and-right.

DLC is basically just an excuse for a shitty unfinished game most of the time.
A fuck load of title updates usually means poorly debugged game.
Games where just as expensive these days as back in the SNES era.
Online and multiplayer only games are becoming more and more common.

    Resistance is futile.

I posted a similar post on Kotaku yesterday. I'm also not feeling the need to get a next gen console. I pretty much knew last gen, that I would get one of the console. There just isn't as much driving force this time around, and the 360/PS3 don't feel outdated yet.

This is 100% true, games are not the same as they use to be. There is very little passion put into todays current games and no developer or publisher take any risks.

I love and hate DLC. I hate it when its already on the disc but you still must purchase it and when DLC is released just moments after the game is and again, it must be purchased. DLC like that is such a rip-off and like you mentioned its just an unfinished game that was released so more money can be made from that DLC that should have been in the game anyways. But I do like DLC for example Skyrim that games DLC is huge and includes a lot of content and not at a bad price, thats when DLC feels right to buy.

I didn't mention it in my post but I feel the same about 360/PS3. This gen is the first gen that doesn't feel ready to end yet but will pretty much be over in November of this year.

    Exactly me opinion.

DLC like a few map packs for games like COD is just a pure rip off.
Pretty much anyone that plays COD does it for the multiplayer alone.
So if they scrap the single player, they can fit more MP maps in it ._.

Bioshock Infinite gets iirc 3 DLC's
The DLC's aren't even in production yet (well they went into production shortly after the game I think) but they said it adds more stuff and a side story to Columbia.
    It looks extremely promising!

If you've been collecting and playing games for 22 years then it could just be possible that your growing out of it. More responsibilities, less time etc. Its not that the new consoles wont be any good or offer really good games. Its just that like me, youve seen this through now 5 or 6 generations at least and it cant possibly have the same excitement behind it than it did when you were younger.

I saved up every single penny I had and took on two paperounds which just about killed me when I was in my early teens so I could get my hands on a Snes on a release date. Id never get thrilled for a console like I did then. But kids and teens even now would do what I did to get there hands on the next consoles.

Bull and shit. The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, Spec Ops: The Line, Telltale's The Walking Dead, Bastion, and Hotline Miami all say "Hi." (And please note, these are just a few risky, passion-driven projects)

If you refuse to look at gaming with anything but nostalgia goggles, your view is going to be incredibly distorted.

I definitely disagree there. Most current-gen titles on my 70" FHD TV look absolutely horrible. I never used to be able to see it because I played on a 32" CRT, but now... wow. A lot of games don't even run in full HD, and the textures are all poop. Poop. All of them. The graphical boost is sorely needed - especially seeing as for whatever reason the majority of games that are coming out nowadays have a "gritty and realistic" art style.

Also, the UI on the Xbox 360 and PS3 is slow and clunky as all hell.

None of those games catch my interest, I bought Bioshock and I really just watched my GF play the entire game because I couldn't bring myself to actually play it. Walking Dead, I love the show but the game wasn't much fun really, it was ok. I do not care about The Last of Us or Spec Ops at all!

Just because you don't care for the games doesn't make them any less risky or passion-driven. (Though you are seriously missed out.)

Also, placing The Walking Dead show above the game? Say whaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Because the most scathing, haunting criticism of video game violence ever created, purposefully marketed as a generic shooter to catch players off-guard, was not risky at all?

The Last of Us, how many post apocalyptic games are there? Like I said I've seen this over and over again. Spec Ops: The Line, another CoD/Battlefield rip off that I don't care to miss. I didn't say every single dev isn't passionate about gaming anymore but these games you named off I just don't see it. But, like I said before its an opinion. If you love those games then play them as much as you can.

I know, and will admit to wearing nostalgia goggles. I feel like gaming isn't what it used to be. I want to have the same feeling I had when I clunked a SNES/Genesis cartridge into my console, and felt the wonder of a new game. I missed out on this gen of gaming. I just didn't have the same drive to play video games, like I used to. It's not the game's fault (although, many games are bland nowadays, but then again, there were bland games in the past, too) I..just don't know.
