What is the firmware version on a PSP 3002 straight out of the box sold at the moment in Australia

6.XX most likely. Though I cant say for sure as I'm not sure when the 3002 came out.

It's likely he'd like a new console and not a preowned one.

If that's the case you're liable to be paying over the odds for a sealed package on ebay (to get a hackable 2000).
