is firefox unbelievably slow now? I hadn't noticed it until I got my new pc on windows 10. it moves at a crawl. chrome and edge don't seem to have this problem, at least for me.

It does seem to go through periods of it.
Maybe try https://www.palemoon.org/
It is a slightly older engine all optimised for better machines where baseline firefox still tries to work with older P4s and such.
