Standalone Linux on PS3 Slim (27c3 demo update)

This is what the fail0verflow 27c3 demo *should* have looked like. As it turns out, the reason why we didn't have working video and had to fall back to an SSH demo was because this Slim is too new to run version 3.15 (what we tried to run), since it does not correctly support this particular revision of the RSX. So here's the same demo, except with version 3.41, which does work.

Nothing especially interesting, just proof that Linux does work with video.
You can see the penguin as promised basically.

Still, its a nice PoC. Good to see it working with video IMO.

Kinda late to show off this development though, more important things have been shown already.
Most importantly, HEN for PSP 3000 and PSP Go (nobody saw that coming) and CFW/.pup signing for the PS3.

Then again, it looks like fail0verflow are mostly interested in getting a full-fledged Linux working, rather than homebrew which is more Geohot's domain right now.

The HEN had nothing to do with the keys...It uses an already discovered exploit in a game demo. And seeing as this was fail0verflow's purpose in hacking the PS3 (restoring Linux), its fairly important IMO. There are many who would think of restoring Linux (indeed, not just restoring it, but breaking the limits placed upon it as well) is more important than a CFW.

EDIT: If you disagree, feel free to ignore this thread. I just wanted to let people know in case someone does care.

There's definitely three sides to this hacking business.
There are those interested in linux, those interested in homebrew, and those interested in piracy.
All are possible right now.

Linux and homebrew are in the same ballpark.

Running linux will let them learn enough about the hardware to write good homebrew.
There's a bit of a distinction though, the LinuxOS will run linux software, whilst GameOS will run PS3 homebrew.
At least, that's what I think...

i love how hard it is to plug in usb drives into the ps3, geohot had difficulty too

Everyone forgets the ROM hackers and game modders.

Because who cares about those guys?

In my experience, only other ROM hackers and game modders. EDIT: Unless it's a translation or cheats.

How much is known about RX btw? Any chance of decent X drivers any time soon?
