I wonder how many millions of dollars revenue other companies have lost because of staff using Facebook on the job.

Take away duplicate accounts used for games like Mafia Wars and Farmville and I suspect the real user count drops by 100 million or more.

Absolutely. I know WAY too many older women posting their Bejeweled Blitz scores when they're supposed to be "productive".

Facebook is the one website that "sells" the item many people in today's world crave for and don't have the means to achieve - the concept of "having friends".

In the world of cubicles, depression is rampant - people live their daily lives getting up, going to work and going to bed, social life is decomposing like a rotting corpse of its former glory. People like to live in the bubble of "having many friends", even if they don't know them, never talked to them and never seen'em. It simply allows them to stay sane, in a sense it satisfies the need for social interaction and acceptation - people do it automatically and subconciously, hence the massive popularity. This is why people are glued to it and this is why it makes so much revenue. There are people who treat their friend meter as a matter of life and death.

...and people who do NOT have those issues yet simply use it as a great way to communicate as the site embeds itself everywhere in the forms of "Log in with Facebook account"'s and other "Post on your Wall"'s and "Like"'s.
