My 1tb Lacie external Harddrive freezes whenever I try to copy something to it. It starts making some crackling sounds and then it just stops copying. Anyone know how to fix this? I'm on Windows 7.

A "crackling" sound (or any easily audible sound) is a bad sign on any HDD (a HDD should only ever make 2 sounds - a spinning sound and a very quiet clicking sound when seeking data). Run a program that can read the SMART and find out if the drive is still healthy, because there's a chance that the header of the HDD has worn out.

The 2 programs I know of: speccy and SpeedFan.

It seems the drive is still healthy. I can put any single file under 300 megabytes on there but anything larger and the harddrive starts to make clicking sounds and the blue light begins to flash like a strobe light. Anyone got any ideas?
