KRIKzz, the creator of various Everdrive flashcarts and devices, has announced his latest work: The EverDrive GB X Series. The GB-X series differs from his previous Everdrive GB, offering some new features like PSRAM chips instead of flash, "Isolated RTC", a new OS, lower power consumption and various other features. There will be 3 GB X cards, The X7, the X5, and the X3, with the feature list for each below. The estimated release date for the cards is "middle-end of summer" according to KRIKzz. No price has been announced, but KRIKzz did say on Twitter that the X3 would be cheaper than the current Everdrive GB, with the X5 and X7 being a bit more expensive.

Wow, they still make carts for Gameboy (Color)? That's pretty cool. Though I'd imagine they don't make much money considering there's so many other alternatives.

I wonder if it's possible to create a GB flash cart without battery.

    my dad works for nintendo.
personally (specially since i pushed tom to create this thread) i find this so exciting and i am hyped...
the gb x7 is the cart that i dreamed about... rtc (isolated) save states, in game menu.. easily swapable battery...
just one thing missing from my dream cart... creating a gb\gba hybrid card but it's a really huge challenge like krikkz answers here: https://twitter.com/krikzz/status/869862146359926784
however i do think it would be possible with a lever mechanism, with 3d printers nowadays it wouldn't be very hard to create a mechanism or way to toggle the "secret switch" on the gba.. or maybe using an adapter like thoose usb cables with a tip for iphone
but in terms of components, it would be really chalenge to make an all in 1...

KRIKzz actually only needs to sell one or two and he's covered his living expenses for the next few months.

This is a great piece of novelty but using it to play it somewhat daily just wouldn't work for me due to the screen being black/green and without backlight. Heck, with an Android, PSP, DS Lite or w/e it can play Game Boy games as well yeah, it's not the original hardware but I don't care.

    What are the alternatives, actually?

    - Traditional flashcards with external programmers = Bung, EMS, etc (discontinued but can be found used, many of them require a parallel port and windows 95 through xp)
    - Flashcards with builtin usb programmer = EMS 64M (again needs proprietary software)
    - Flashcards with usb drive emulation = Drag N Derp (discontinued?, price comparable to Everdrive)
Most of the above have poor mapper support (despite there having barely been four first-party ones), and only support one game at once (multicart-like rom combinations can be compiled, but you're still limited by internal storage and most importantly ram size for saves, only 1 save at once is the norm)
    - Everdrive clones = Jack Diy (questionable build quality, no updates)

While Everdrive is an expensive luxury product, and prices comparable to Sky3DS are far from appealing, remember it's still only 2-3 new original games :)

Is the "isolated RTC" function the same with the everdrive GBA X5(that has RTC and options to turn it on/off) or it is something new, and only for the GB X series?

Yeah, these things cost a pretty penny. It's always around £80-100 regardless of currency.

in the gba flashcarts (everdrive gba x5, m3 perfect), every game "takes controll" of the real time clock.. when you start a new game on pokemon it will reset the clock back..
meaning that, if you play several games with rtc it conflits and clock will be messed up...

i do think by isolated rtc, he means he figured a way (or this didn't happen on the gb games) that each game has it's own track of time...

As far as I understand it:

You set the clock in the flashcard menu
You launch Pokemon gen 2/Telefang, you set the clock in-game and save
Flashcard knows that at flashcard time X, in-game time for that game was Y
You start the game again at time X+N, emulated rtc starts from Y+N

Damn this is great. Haven't bought a GB flashcard yet. I guess it would be worth it getting the latest model.

seems to me x5 and x3 shouldn't really exist and manufacturing just one version of the flashcart would make it overall cheaper?

You know, I'd buy a lot of his stuff if it were about half as expensive. As it is I'm not buying anything.

I don't think keeping prices reasonable is a priority
