The Orange Box is now an essential IMO

Half-life 2 = best FPS/action game ever IMO
ep1 = Great continuation
ep2 = haven't played it yet
Portal = Best and most refreshing puzzle/FPS type game I've played in a LONG LONG LONG Time
TF2 = Meh. Not bothered about this one but the other 4 make up for it

Nah Half Life 2 is definitely not the best FPS/action game ever. I'd put Bioshock instead.
TF2 is amazing, you better test it

Mm, there are far too many essentials to name, but it all comes down to your own personal tastes, really:

Kameo, Halo 3, Viva Pinata, Gears of Wars, Blue Dragon, Orange Box, Forza 2, BioShock, just way, waaaaay too many to name. But it's the ones down the line we should all be excited for: Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Lost Odyssey, Too Human, GTAIV, Resident Evil 5, Fable 2, Devil May Cry 4, and I could go on but ice cream melts quickly.

Currently enjoying:
Halo 3 (beating singleplayer campaign ATM), Orange Box (never played HL2 before, a chance to catch up + portal), Tony Hawk's Proving Ground (it ain't that bad), Project Gotham Racing 4 (for some reason reminds me of older NFS games), Bioshock (love the athmosphere)
