PS1/2 Dug Out The Old PS2.. Now What?

A 76 year old friend of mine just got his first LED TV. He was using on CRT type that was limited. After hooking up his LED TV, I move his old CRT to his grandsons play room. I noticed he had some equipment collecting dust inside the old entertainment center. After going through it all and hooking up his vcr/dvd combo, I hooked up the PS2 Slim. He also had (2) PS2 Phats. I saw a HDD/Network attachment on one. I brought it home and dug out my PS2 to see if I can't make something out of them. His grandson is so deprived to game systems that I want to make his PS2 work off the HD of 'Backup' games.

Sony PS2 Phat (USA)
Network adapter
20GB Maxtor drive (I had to tear the garage apart to find)
Controller

I haven't touched a PS2 for 15 years (if not more). I want to at least get it setup with the 20GB IDE drive. I do want to convert the IDE to SATA. I borrowed a game that is confirmed to be good for the PS2 (MLB 2004).

At this point, I am clueless where to begin. I read several things on GBATemp but it is all Greek to me. Any hardcore PS2 owners want to lend a hand?

Get :

- HDD Low Level format tool : http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ to low format the hdd
- uLaunchELF WIP7 MBR version : http://aybabtu.chez.com/PS2/ule_wip7.zip
- HDD Raw Copy Tool : http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-Raw-Copy-Tool/
- FMCB newbie pack : http://www.mediafire.com/file/0acpyhxe6p2gq6r/FMCB1.953_NP.7z

1. Low format the HDD using HDD Low Level format tool ;
2. Write uLE_WIP7 MBR version (__mbr.raw file) using HDD Raw Copy tool onto the HDD ;
3. Put FMCB newbie pack on a USB device ;
4. Boot your PS2 with USB device plugged in ;
5. Go to mass:/ and run FMCBInstaller.ELF. From there, R1 > Install FHDB ;

Thanks,I was googling FreeHDBoot and just got porn vids as hits.. lol. Right now I am trying to find a PS2 video cable. I hooked up TOS but it was for audio only. Looking for all my PS2 stuff.. I found all my missing Gamecube stuff.. gotta love my kids that gets into my stuff and throws it wherever is convenient.

I need to convert the Network adapter to SATA. Any links to an adapter that will fit/work for the PS2? Also, If I did stick with IDE.. would a 250GB Seagate Barracuda fit? All my IDE drives I have right now are WD and will not fit.

In 2002 Maxtor HDD's where recomended to use with the PS2 network adapter.
If you got lucky, You find a Maxtor 500GB ide HDD.
But it is better idea to use a IDE to SATA converter with a SATA HDD.

One more thing:
When using HDloader and a big HDD like a 500gb or 1TB one, when starting up HDDloader for the first time (after you transfer all you ISO's to this HDD).
You will get a black screen, but after some minutes HDDloader is working. I think HDDloader is busy to make a list of the games from those big HDD's.

Do I need a memory card? It quits stating I have no memory card.

FreeMcBoot (FMCB) iirc is installed on the memory card and allows you to boot games from the hard drive. FreeMcBoot is just the loader.

I would check pawn shops. All the ones I have around me have them. Also if there are any independent game stores near you, try there. As far as authenticity goes, all the ones I've seen that were sony brand said "Playstation 2" on them. I've had 3rd party memory cards that worked just fine though.

I get cleanup error, and it does not install..
 
start from step 1 again ?

I format the MC
I went to install FHD8 - I get the cleanup failed - something like files not found
