Sony published a patent yesterday combining the Dualshock and Move technologies into one controller.

I hope this never sees the light of day. It looks disgusting.

A Dual Shock controller that has breasts? Colour me Shocked. :creep:

...seriously though, yeah, it looks horrible. I don't think it'll see the light of day, they just want to have "modular controllers" covered. The last time they messed with the design, they were met with a criticism tsunami - remember the boomerang? Not long after it was first spotted, they returned right back to the tried-and-true design, and good for them.

    Where's Gahars?

We need a witty play on words like:

I was dually shocked and moved to tears by its grotesque design.

The part that interests me the most about this picture is that the directional buttons are not segmented, that appears to be an actual d-pad like on Nintendo systems, or at least a directional cap like on 360 pads.

That's because Nintendo had a patent on the + design. Other companies had to be different in some form because of that. It expired in 2005, though, so now anyone's free to use that type of design. I guess Sony just saw it as superior.

oh god yes, I love that they finally abandoned the segmented directional d-pad, so much better for 2D games. Hope they do the same with their next controller.

I knew they would eventually added the navi controls to the main move controller....But this I wasn't expecting at all.

This way you only need one controller instead of two. I like it.

First they make a dildo to practice on then you get the real thing- just like real life.

Normally I am up for a bit of shooting down patents but it seems to be cheesy film time right now so I am out until the morning.

Edit- I am up for a first pass analysis though.
Pictures seem like they might be half interesting. I swear I have seen kids proto gaming toys do detachable controllers though. Before hunting through toy catalogues I do have to wonder how much the wiimote and nunchuck could tank this- detection of the halves was well established from the start there and many examples seem to be stuff it did. A quick scan through of the claims has nothing I care to mention other than I reckon I could go prior art for most and obviousness for more others (they make special note of having various motion sensors- I would not have thought it that radical to add a few more).

This looks fucking horrible. It looks like someone stuck the PS Move balls onto a DualShock, which is exactly what it is. Ergonomics don't look so good either, a controller like that only feels good if you have both hands on it. The PS Move was designed for one in each hand, the DualShock was designed with one in two hands. You can't stick them together without sacrificing aesthetics and ergonomics.

To be honest, I'm more dually shocked they're moving to patenting baldness (piece 190).

Sure, it looks a bit ridiculous, but it's an interesting direction for the controller to go. Since I'm expected to make a pun, you might even say it's ballsy.
