Hey guys im pretty new. I just ordered my r4 card looking fwd to play roms on a bds lite i found at a yard sale and fixed. The card says it comes preconfigured and i only need to download roms and start playing. My question is can i do this from my android phone? I don't have a computer. Also what exactly is home brew? Is it like an app store kinda thing? Do u have to download that first or can i just download roms and start playing? I'm fairly new to this and would love if someone could teach me about being able to get aome da games on my r4 card to start playing. Thanks guys.

"Homebrew" is just a word for unofficial ROMs/software created by the community. Anything that falls into this category is usually considered homebrew. What you'll most likely need is firmware for your R4 (depends on the model) and .NDS ROM files.

Homebrew, like Akiko said in this instance, is a word to describe unofficial software created by the community for a variety of different consoles. The most common form of homebrew is retro emulators.

Depending on what R4 card you have, you need to find the appropriate firmware for that specific cart.

My question is can i do this from my android phone? I don't have a computer.
Sure, but it'll create some useless folders as it does that automatically whenever you insert a new sd card.
Also what exactly is home brew?
In this instance R4 is a DS flashcart that can hold & play any DS game as if you're playing the OEM games cartridge. Obviously the advantage here is that since it uses an sd card you can load it with more than 1 game, and you can edit/ delete games as much as you'd like, as opposed to the OEM game cartridge of a single game (which can't be changed).
So, "homebrew" is a way to play game backups (through pirating games, or not) and have all your game collection in one convenient flashcart (that holds all your games & saves), instead of having to swap between game cartridges etc.
you could also play games of other systems through emulation (like say, NES etc.), if the system is capable of such feat that is..
Is it like an app store kinda thing?
No. Just way to play game backups as explained above.
Do u have to download that first or can i just download roms and start playing?
First what you need to do is find out what r4 flashcart you hae, as not all are equal, and if it works, depending on what DS system you have, plugging the flashcart bh itself without the sd card it should show up on the ds menu (appears with some game's icon) , if it does, you know that it works. Next is to look for the exae name if the flashcart jn order to find the kernel for it, think of the kernel as the "driver" or the firmware that will allow the flashcart and the DS to communicate with each other, you could post a pic and the name and we could help if you want, or you can do it yourself.
Next is the roms, and unfortunately you're on your own when it comes to where you can find them (endless to say, Google is your friend). 😉

Eventhough the New 3DS XL is more powerful, I still feel like the DS Lite was a more polished system. It's a real shame that it never got an XL variant keeping the GBA slot. You'd have to go on AliExpress and buy an ML shell to give a DS phat the unofficial "DS Lite" treatment, and that's the best we'll ever get I'm afraid.

The phat model had amazingly loud speakers tho.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.
