"Yuji Horii, creator of the Dragon Quest series, revealed at a Square Enix press conference in Tokyo today that the next entry in the role-playing game series, Dragon Quest X, is in development for the Wii.

After announcing the final release date for Dragon Quest IX, which will be released for the Nintendo DS in Japan on March 28 for 5980 yen, Horii confirmed that the series would be returning to consoles for its tenth entry, according to Japanese game site Gigazine. Square Enix released a spin-off, Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, for the Wii in 2007, but DQ X will be the first release in the core series for the Wii platform.

The revelation comes two years after the announcement that DQ IX would be released on the Nintendo DS after two entries on the PlayStation 2."

Very cool! Bout time the Wii got a new killer RPG. It'll probably look similar to DQ8.

Probably...but it's cheaper making a Wii game and a ridiculous amount of people have a Wii so the potential profit is huge.
This combined with Monster Hunter 3 will make the Wii an even bigger monster in Japan than it already is.

All we need now is a FF7 remake for the Wii to complete the circle of rage.

DQ games always come out on the best selling system in Japan. You can trace this through, NES, SNES, PS1, PS2, DS, Wii... There's a pattern.

Awesome. I'm just hoping for no gimmicks. Especially after Dragon Quest Swords.

They don't have the right to stop a Wii port. Square Enix holds all the rights to it. That's how they were able to get away with porting the SNES Final Fantasy 1-6 (except 3 which never got the the US until DS) and Chrono Trigger to the PS1.

This was pretty much expected actually.. DQ always goes to the biggest user base in Japan. The situation was too unstable when they started DQIX development, so S-E decided to go to the DS. Now things are more stable with the Wii leading japanese sales by a big margin.. their decision was obvious here.

Nah.. DQ is famous for being extremely conservative, in more then 20 years, the main gameplay elements are still untouched. The Wiimote will probably be used on some minigames but don't expect to see it on nothing essential to the game.

While its great to see this come to the Wii, its a long long long way off. I don't even expect to see the Japanese release until 2010 at the earliest.

I hope Level-5 are still handling the series after 9.

    Hells yeah!

Not a total surprise, but definitely news I'm glad to hear. First of all because I want to play the game on Wii, but perhaps more importantly, it's another huge turn for the system. Monster Hunter was probably the first, and hopefully this will be more incentive for other big franchises to come to Wii with their A-game.

Two entries on the PS2? DQVIII and...? ...cause DQVII was on PS1. They must be counting that spinoff mystery dungeon game that never came to the US. Otherwise, I'm confused...

Either way, if DQX is anything like DQVIII, I can't wait. That game was easily one of the best games on PS2, and one of my top favorite RPGs as well. The visuals, music, story, voice acting, and gameplay were all top notch.
