I was looking for a sprite sheet containing Dragon Quest IX's NPC sprites, and couldn't find any. I've since had a poke around in the game files, but I couldn't find the sprites themselves or a working palette, mostly coming out with menu elements instead (all in .pac files, for some reason). I was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me understand more about ROM hacking so that I could rip these sprites, or better yet rip them themselves.

I know it's incredibly bad form to double post, but I have a couple of more concrete questions about this. I think I've found the files I need (called, for example, C01.npc), but according to the header these are actually .narc files. How would I go about decompressing files like these?
Also, there appear to be a lot of .gp2 files. Does anyone know what those are? It looks like they might be compressed text, but I'm not sure.
