Gaming don't you think this should happen.

I wouldn't mind a YouTube client for 3DS. The problem is, it will never happen.

Firstable, let's forget about running any videos in 3DS' browser. It can barely render web pages! Just try opening a regular (non-mobile) version of Facebook and wait until you die... and then wait again when you scroll a little bit.

Then, there's the problem with 3DS' hardware. Youtube sends videos either as MP4 (H.264) format, as WebM and as FLA (various proprietary Flash codecs). 3DS is definitely not powerful enough to decode H.264 nor WebM (which have similar complexity), especially that its GPU does not support programmable pixel shaders that would help to offload the work. And to get access to Flash proprietary codecs, Nintendo would need to pay Adobe.

Of course, apart from shitty 10-minute camera recording which waste enormous amounts of space due to a primitive MJPEG codec, 3DS is perfectly able to play high quality videos. After all, we can see them in eShop and in Nintendo Video. The problem is that Nintendo uses a proprietary paid codec ActImagine/Mobiclip, which will never be implemented by YouTube.
My 3DS opens that no problems. Even the full Twitter page no problem.Takes probably 1 minute (yes abit slow)

Adobe for mobile is also abolished.

But other than these, pretty much agreed with the rest. I can't say that the 3DS is so damn powderful or weak like shit because I have absolutely no idea of the specs, but a YouTube app just seems really really unlikely.

That's what I meant - these pages open very very slowly. If a device can't render web pages with a decent speed, how could it decode H.264 video ?

Quite easily actually. There's a huge difference between interpreting HTML code and using a simple codec. To further prove my point...

nokia-6650-t-mobile-4-in.jpg

HI! My name is Nokia 6650, I have an ARM11 processor running at 369Mhz. I'm a much weaker device than the 3DS and YET I can view videos from Youtube, among others, without any issues whatsoever! That's because Youtube released a Symbian S60 app that allows me to do so with no sweat! In fact, I'm pretty sure that even my weaker brothers and sisters can manage this rather unimpressive feat. Streams other then Youtube are opened natively via the built-in RealPlayer. Y'know, a player that actually works and is capable of playing videos longer than 10 minutes? Yeah, I thought you knew it.
~Miss Nokia 6650, my current phone

The 3DS has twin ARM11 CPU's running at aprox. 1Ghz (or so the tale goes) and an on-board graphics chip, it's more than perfectly capable of decoding a video stream at its native resolution, which by the way, isn't all that big. The issue here is that Youtube is owned by Google, and as we already know, Nintendo absolutely hates paying any royalties. They'd rather develop their own bastard clone of Youtube, that is, if they felt like it. And they don't, because there's no need for it - it's a portable game console, not a netbook.

The 3DS renders webpages slowly because its browser is badly programmed and not optimized for the hardware it's using. I'm willing to bet that the GFX chip takes a nap when the browser is turned on, one core is dedicated for the OS (god knows why) and only one is actually used for browsing. Call it a "hunch".

I don't care about youtube but putting a web browser on something without flash is really dumb, the Wii browser had flash so why not the 3DS.

Because Adobe discontinued Flash for mobile devices?

I'm pretty sure the reason why the browser is slow is because it isn't meant to use the full resources of the 3DS for itself in the first place. It is part of the group of OS apps that run alongside actual 3ds apps/games/etc at the same time. If they made a separate browser just like any other 3DS app, they could allow it to use just as much resources as the next app.

Now, according to a little research on the subject matter, while the webM format takes quite a bit of resources and power to play in a web browser, the requirements become greatly reduced when the browser is taken out of the equation. Just as Foxi4 pointed out, the low-spec Nokia 6650 is capable of playing back YT videos because it uses a dedicated app. I could see Google/Youtube gaining an interest with making such an app for the 3DS if the 3DS continue to gain popularity alongside the increasing number of 3D videos it adds.

I completely forgot that the browser may run while playing a game... That'd mean that indeed it has a restricted ammount of resources at its disposal, thus works much slower than it could've. Thanks for the heads-up DiscostewSM, that answers alot of questions.

Agree with most of your comments. A Youtube client (especially Youtube 3D) would make Nintendo Video obsolete. Who would like to watch shitty magic tricks & orchestras playing Zelda tunes, especially that you need to wait weeks for new content... Oscar's Oasis is cool, but I think I've seen full episodes on YT.

As for this Nokia, I don't know. Some smartphones have dedicated chips/GPUs for decoding H.264. Also, don't forget that this codec is not free, and Nintendo is known for keeping it cheap (wasn't Wii using shitty MJPEG codec as well ?)

Even if Nintendo had to pay royalties, they wouldn't have to pay that much. Not many people are using 3DS'es (Nobody buys them in America...) so it's not like that would have to happen. I just think they are going to try and come out with something like youtube, that isn't quite right. Like Hatena, in a way. I hate how the 3DS doesn't even have Hatena, let alone no Youtube.

YouTube would be a nice addition, but not a necessity.
The whole idea of bringing flash to 3ds, I doubt it'll ever happen unless some type of homebrew is introduced. Even if they do bring YouTube, we wouldn't see flash support for other sites like gametrailers.
My whole reasoning is that nintendo would want content limited as much as possible. For the same reason Steve Jobs didn't want to enable flash for i devices. Porn.
If it happens, it'll be a dedicated YouTube app for exactly that reason. To not encourage porn.
That's just my best guess. I'd like to see flash support more than just YouTube, but I'm not worried about it.
YouTube/flash/enabling web movies or not, I'll be perfectly happy playing games on a gaming device.
All else is just an added perk.

The main thing now is that Flash will no longer be produced for mobile devices and the 3DS is a mobile device.

Actually i been wanting this since 1st hearing about the 3DS.
was always wondering if there would be a Youtube 3DSWare app, kinda like netflix on 3DS.
that would be beast. login, watch youtube videos on 3DS (in 2D or 3D) via the Youtube 3DSWare, & upload you're 3D 3DS videos via the Youtube 3DSWare. (even download you're own videos to watch on the go)
when you're on the browser & want to watch a youtube video when clicked it opens the Youtube 3DSWare just like on iphone/ipod touch.
Exactly what I was thinking!

most people want it, it's a cool concept, it could work, but Nintendo don't, so there's no youtube app, deal with it. If you want youtube so badly get yourself a phone with 3g connectivity and tada, youtube wherever you go. /thread, anyone?

And again would you be able to view videos on the 3DS No. I am not getting a 3G Plan just to watch YouTube

You can convert video's to 3D video's, for viewing it on the 3DS.

I'd rather watch Youtube on my computer since its a hell of a lot faster then my crappy HK Phone, can't judge about the 360 since I'm not a gold member.
