mine had broken touchscreen (upper right part, 1/4 of screen) was misplaced when touched, unable to calibrate. 5$ replacement from dealextreme, not perfect and now the touch screen and plastic layer on it have stick mark what is somewhat annoying. Also, two days ago L button started to not register presses, but i got that also fixed by putting my mouth on it and blowing in like hell - read about it @ teamcyclops forums.

all other thins are xosmetic, it works for now but the big rainbowy smudge in middle of touchscreen is - graah.

First DS I got had a dead pixel ;_; After that, a couple years down the line, the hinge broke, someone stole it and it was later found with the top screen bashed in. Next one was an import from Japan, the graphite black. I liked it mostly because it came with lemon candy and it had the backlight function like the DSLite--my SuperCard ONE at the time was able to change the light settings, and unlike the DSLite, there wasn't an ugly yellow-ish tint to the light. That broken the hinge later on too, and it lost the top-screen when I was hit by a car last year walking to the college bus in the morning. My brother's let me use his ever since, which is a red DS. Him being effectively paralyzed through most of his body, he never got to play it too much, so it was basically brand new when I borrowed it. I felt like shit the day that hinge broke too

He bough himself a DSLite, which is easier for him to play, so I guess it's alright now :/

A blue NDS (my second one, I had a launch one which its L and R buttons broke...),and its working perfectly fine... I'm happy the barcode isn't visible, a few months back I was going to sell this thing since I needed money for my brothers present, and my CycloDS has made it so awesome

I have nothing wrong with my DS or my DS lite but my freinds had some problems with their DS Phat:

1. the hinge broke on one. My freind fixed it with glue I think..
2. The touch screen ceased to work on another. It was obliterated when my friend got p****d at pokemon (

Does scratches count?

Can/should I let replace my DS phat? Or does Nintendo doesn't make them anymore?

No. I take care of my precious DS. There are a lot of scratches on the touch screen but they're not that deep and they do not affect the functionality.

Some of my friends treat their DS touch screens as if they are pressure-sensitive. THEY ARE F'IN NOT!

I don't have any problems with mine. My brother and cousin have problems with theres though. my brothers DS Lite has a broken hinge. It literally feels like its going to snap off any second. My cousins DS just looks plain dirty and disgusting and it makes a clicking noise when you open it.

Phat:
1. had broken hinge, so bought replacement shell & fixed it;
2. calibration has been stuffed (need to touch screen approx 5-10mm to the right) for about a year now and i haven't been able to fix it

Creaky dpad. It works fine and even the diagonals are good. It's just that certain directions creak when pressed. I don't worry about it.

That's about it though. My black DSlite has been very reliable. It was bought within the first week of the black ones release in America.

Red/black DSL has that slightly noticeable tinting of the screens. Black DSL has buttons which don't seem as responsive as they should. Shattered one DS Phat's screen, later removing it.

Rest of the units seem fairly defect-less.

If you've got scratches on your touchscreen then you've been rougher with yours than i have mine (ooer) and my hinge still broke, after being used very carefully, by me, an aging old bint, not abused by some kid.

Guess what, actually they are.

However, I gather there doesn't seem to be much if any software that takes advantage of it. There's a homebrew paint program that does, however (harder you press, the bigger the brush mark.)

I know this sounds obvious, but until I played with the system settings i didn't know the DS had a recalibrate option, so in case you didn't realise... Does the DS Phat not have the recalibration option as one of the choices from the start/default/no-cartridge screens? I thought the Phat had the same firmware as the Lite.

well, my white DSL has a dead pixel, but surprisingly nothing else considering i dropped it on my hard basement floor like 3 times

on my old silver DS Phat, it had a bunch of scratches, a dead pixel on the top screen, and marks on the touch screen where the keyboard was in animal crossing from typing so much on wifi!
