After installing HBC, do I need to keep that SD card in there forever? Or can I take it out, format it and what not and then put back the original files after I'm done. Or can HBC run without and SD Card but instead a USB?

Also, how many blocks are there in 1 GB?

well yes it need an sd card so that it can read the apps. also you can use a 8gb sd card but I recommend 2gb

The latest HBC does not need a SD Card, just a HDD with a FAT32 partition. Make sure there is an "apps" folder in the root of your hard drive.

The HBC doesn't need anything to run, though to launch apps you need a SD card or USB HDD formatted to fat32. Apps go inside an Apps folder on the root of the drive. AFAIK it needs to be plugged into the usb port on the right hand side as well.
