I saw somewhere that 3DS games don't work on an R4 cartridge in a 3DS, is this true? And if so, do ANY flash carts play 3DS games? Thanks.

Like everyone said, there are a few carts but they are outdated and a few games don’t work. You are better off hacking your system and installing a CFW for 3DS games

That's a shame... I really don't want to install CFW on my 2DS as I prefer not touching the consoles memory as I like it original. I would refer a way where you could go through some console steps, like Memory Pit for DSi and boot into the SD card, so when I remove the SD card, the console is not changed...

lol. well. ya got either cfw. or ya got. paying for each game and playing them. if ya dont care for portability then use your pc to play them.

Custom firmware is safer than you think. We're not in the Gateway-era anymore where bricks were very common to come across.

You're mostly going to be using CFW to install games and homebrew as long as you know what you're doing. It's either this or nothing.

I suggest you give this a read: https://3ds.hacks.guide

It's been a while so please correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be possible to use NTRBoot to create a 'clean'/stock NAND dump?

Not exactly what OP wants, but it would allow for a relatively safe way to restore the system if something happens.

Yes. If you place GodMode9 as "boot.firm", then you can create a NAND backup before going ahead with the B9S hax install.
